Edge e520 mSATA SSD

2012-01-25, 19:09 PM

Hi, all!

I am considering buying a mSATA SSD for my Thinkpad Edge e520. Does anyone know if it will even work? I have an open slot where the WWAN card could/would go.

Thanks,

jbgrzy

Re: Edge e520 mSATA SSD

So I got an mSATA SSD (an OCZ Nocti 30gb) and that worked great. I installed Windows 7 Prof. 64 bit on it, and that worked ok. Then I installed the Intel Graphics driver, and now I get a BSOD when I try to start the system. Currently i am running off of a standard graphics driver with a max of 1024x768 resolution.

Any suggestions?

@jbgrzy,
You'll need to install SP1 before the graphics driver. There is a known incompatibility.

Thanks, but I got it working. First I let Thinkvantage System Update install all the drivers and software EXCEPT the graphics driver, then I let Windows Update install the graphics driver it wanted. Now everything works perfectly!

I was curious, does Lenovo have any software associated with Enhanced Experience that takes advantage of an ssd?

Thanks,

jbgrzy

I think your best bet for optimizing the SSD is to use the Intel SSD Toolbox.

W520: 2960XM, Q2000M @ 1091/1380, 32GB RAM, 500GB&750GB HDD & 500GB SSD, FHD&MB168B+

W550s: 5600U, K620M at 1164/1281, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 3K touchscreen
X200s: SL9400, 6GB RAM, 64GB SD card, WXGA+ screen

Lenovo does not currently have any software that does anything special with an mSATA SSD.  Did it come with any software from OCZ?  What exactly are you trying to do with it?

Most people install Windows and applications on the mSATA SSD, and then move their libraries (Docs/Pics/Vids/Music) to the HDD.

How did you install Windows on the SSD?  From your recovery/restore disks or a fresh copy with different serial?  Is there a noticeable difference using the SSD?

I used a fresh copy with a different serial. (Windows 7 Professional instead of Premium)

I did try the recovery/restore disks, but they didn't work. I believe that it was because I only had a 30Gb SSD, and what it was trying to restore was larger than my 30Gb drive. It was just as it was almost done with the restore that it froze and didn't move for a long time. So I aborted it and did a fresh install.

I believe there is a noticeable difference when compared with the original HDD. Boot times have decreased to 20-25 seconds. (as compared to the previous 45-90 seconds)

Overall, I would recommend the upgrade with one caveat: Get a 60Gb SSD or larger. Don't get a 30GB. It is too much trouble to maintain and try to keep enough free space on it.

Thanks,

jbgrzy
