256GB USB flash drive disconnects randomly from L13 yoga gen 2

2021-03-12, 21:31 PM

Hi

I have a new L13 yoga gen 2 (20VL-S06500) with a clean install of Windows 10 64 bit PRO. All newest drivers (according to Lenovo Vantage) and all Windows updates are installed.

My problem:

  • An USB flash drive (Transcend JetFlash 920 256GB with USB 3.2 gen 1) disconnects randomly, sometimes after a few seconds, sometimes a few minutes. I does not depend on the file and happens with and without bitlocker. There is no error in the Device manager. I find nothing interesting in the Events manager (but I don't know what to look for exactly).
  • It happens independently of the way the USB flash drive is connected: directly to the PC or to a Dell dock connected to the PC using USB-C (or Thunderbolt).
  •
  • All my other USB flash drives work perfectly on this PC (whereas the biggest one has only 128GB). All my USB HDD work perfectly too.
  • The USB flash drive works perfectly on a L13 yoga gen 1, on an old Thinkpad T430s and on a Dell Latitude 7480.

Does anybody have any clues?

Further informations:

  • I have tried the usual solutions like deactivating "Power off to save power" in the device manager. The settings in the BIOS and the Device manager are exactly the same as on the "old" L13 yoga (gen 1), which has no problem with the USB flash disk.
  • The clean install of Windows happened without problem or error, except at the very beginning when trying to activate the option "OS Optimized defaults" in the BIOS. This always causes an error like "Cannot write settings, write protected" (other options, like secure boot, can be changed and saved without problem)
  • One time, when leaving the BIOS settings, I got a black screen with a small cryptical code at the top left. After cycling the power, everything worked OK.

If anybody has an idea why I cannot save the option "OS Optimized defaults" in the BIOS, I would be interested too...

Thanks and regards

Patrick

Hello pafff,

Greetings

You mentioned that the USB flash drive (Transcend JetFlash 920 256GB with USB 3.2 gen 1) works with L13 yoga (gen 1).
What's the Windows version and OS build for the L13?
It could possibly compatibility issues with the OS version
Update us soon as convenient

Hello

The "old" L13 yoga gen 1 and the "new" L13 yoga gen 2 have exactly the same OS configuration (Windows 10 64 bit PRO Version 20H2 10.0.19042 Build 19042).

Regards

Patrick

Hello pafff,

Would other USB (hoping same or bigger capacity) have the same issue ?
You can try checking the storage manufacturer for specific Firmware / drivers needed.

Hello

I have no other USB flash drives with such a big capacity.

All my other drives (<=128GB) work on the L13 yoga gen 2.

The 256GB drive words an all PCs, including two L13 yoga gen 1, but not on the L13 yoga gen 2.

Is there any way to look for errors in a log file?

Regards

Patrick

This may be a power issue, kindly check "Always ON-USB" for the changing port.
Also try to disable and enable it under Device manager
