Applying updates to R52....

2009-04-05, 21:35 PM

We have an R52 that has served us quite well.  Until now, we have used the Lenovo "System Update" function to ensure that our product is up to date.

Now, however, when we try to bring up System Update, we get a message that this tool (feature?) is changing.  As a result, the following questions come up...

a. I have never paid attention ... But does (or did) System Update also apply the Microsoft Security Patches that are needed (I am asking since I have heard stories of these patches "breaking" things and thought that perhaps, Lenovo would TEST a security patch to ensure that we do not break something).  If not, does anyone have a suggested / preferred protocol how to apply these with the greatest "safety"?

b. Does anyone know how the "newer and better" System Update will work when it comes out in May (allegedly)?  And, *why* is Lenovo changing this, anyway?

Thank you!!

a) you can run windows update and get the security patches you need without any worries. Just don't let it download any hardware drivers that might be offered.

b) the discussion can be found here.
