Ethernet issue with SL 300

2009-09-17, 6:43 AM

Hi,

I'm having an issue with the ethernet disconnecting itself on a SL300.

The computer is booted every morning.

Sometimes this works out just fine, and it can connect via the ethernet.

But, a few times (couple times a week) the ethernet card disables itself and dissapears from the device manager.

What fixes this is rebooting, entering BIOS and setting it back to manufacturer settings (a regular reboot doesn't do the trick).

Is there anyone who knows a fix for this?

It's getting pretty annoying to do that a couple times a week..

Thanks!

Does it also sometimes say there's a connection issue (only 10mbps instead of 100/1000) when there's not even an Ethernet cable hooked up?

I had similar problems, and they all went away when I downloaded the driver right off of Realtek's page. The one in the Lenovo SL300/400/500 driver list is incredibly dated.

Not quite sure if it indicates anything like that.

Very good tip, and I'll definitly look into that!

Well, there were other symptoms too ;)...

For instance, those error messages were sometimes followed by beautiful white text on tasteful blue backgrounds, filled with even more error messages and memory addresses :D

I'm guessing it's a combination BIOS/Driver issue, as usual.

Strange. Is it a Realtek adapter? Maybe there's a different one in the SL300. Nevertheless, driver updates are usually a pretty good bet :)

If that doesn't work, you should try a different switch/router, or at least a different port on the same device, and a second known good ethernet cable.

-edit- Ignore that second part... forgot the device wasn't even showing up in the device manager :P

I don't have any of the computers in at the moment, so I can't check..

But we did try to update the drivers on one of the computers at one point.

As you're saying, it doesn't seem unreasonable that it's a driver error.

Since both the computers have the issue.

They are connected to the same switch aswell, which also could be worth checking into.

The thing is, we've only got two SL 300's and they both fail the same way.

No other computers on the same switch fails.

Looks more and more like a driver error!

Which BIOS are you running? Maybe there's something in the changelogs of the next-in-line BIOS referring to a problem like this...
