Fastest processor upgrade for Thinkpad SL500

2009-07-05, 18:31 PM

I was wondering if the Thinkpad SL500 can accept the Core 2 Duo T9900 3.06GHz processor?  Since it runs at the same FSB as the T9400 2.53GHz, I would assume it is a direct drop in.  Am I wrong?

Also, can this laptop handle 4GB Ram modules for a total of 8GB system memory?

Thanks for any thoughts on the questions.

Re: Fastest processor upgrade for Thinkpad SL500

Hello from Russia guys!

At first, let me thank you all for this thread. I had wanted to upgrade my SL500 for a while before I found this thread and I couldn't find the information on what kind of CPU would be compatible with my laptop.
So I stumbled upon this thread and found out that some person has already upgraded the laptop just like mine. What a relief!
I used to have a T5870 CPU and 3gb of RAM.

Now I have installed a T9900 CPU and two DDR2 800mhz 4gb RAMs for a total of 8gb.

I'm happy to inform you that this new combination works like a charm! My laptop works much faster now!

Now I'm thinking about changing my current screen (1280*800) for a wuxga 1920*1080. I did some research on the Internet and it seems that my graphic card (Nvidia GeForce G105M) should work with the new screen.

Anyway, I will keep you guys informed about my progress.

Thanks again for this useful thread!

Re: Fastest processor upgrade for Thinkpad SL500

OK, so I have been scouring the forums looking for answers to my two questions in my previous post.  I have finally found the answer to the RAM question.

The SL500 can only recognize 4GB RAM so you can't use 4GB modules as only 2GB is recognized.  I found this from another post here where they installed 2 Kingston 4GB modules (for total of 8GB) and the system only saw 4GB.

Now, I still haven't found an answer to the processor question.  Does anyone know if the T9900 3.06 GHz processor will work in the SL500?  Will the BIOS recognize it for what it is?  My SL500 currently has a T5870 2.0 GHz processor and I would like to upgrade it to either the T9800 2.93 GHz or T9900 3.06 GHz processor.  Since both of these processors run within the range of the T9400 2.53 GHz processor which is an option for my SL500, I assume they should work.

Can anyone verify this?

Thanks.

Re: Fastest processor upgrade for Thinkpad SL500

I still haven't been able to find anywhere that states whether or not I can drop the T9900 3.06GHz processor in the SL500.  From everything that I have found, it SHOULD work but it seems the only thing that might be an issue is the BIOS if it is not coded to recognize the T9900.

Has anyone tried or heard of someone putting the T9900 in an SL500 and having it work correctly?  Since the T9400 (2.53GHz 1066MHz FSB) is an option on the Lenovo website for the SL500, I can't see why the T9900 (3.06GHz 1066MHz FSB) wouldn't work with the exception of the BIOS not recognizing it correctly.

If anyone knows if this CPU will work, please post.

Thanks.

Has anyone tried this yet?  I still haven't been able to find anywhere where it has been attempted.  If anyone knows, please post.

Thanks.

Re: Fastest processor upgrade for Thinkpad SL500

Hi... posting here for the first time.

I'm also interested if this would work. My SL500 has a 1.8GHz T5670 and I *really* want to upgrade now.

BUT: It doesn't even have to be the T9900; I'd already be more than happy if the -> T9400 <- works with my machine. Can anyone confirm if it does?! Currently my machine runs with FSB800 - does the SL500 *really* support an FSB of 1066 MHz?? I'd be grateful for any information anyone could give me regarding this issue...

Thanks in advance,

Snob

i upgraded the cpu first to t7500 and then to t9400.
everything worked smooth.
dont forget to upgrade the bios before the cpu upgrade.

also the fsb is set to 1066.

A few months late responding, regarding RAM:

My Thinkpad SL500 w/ 64bit Windows 7 supports the 4GB RAM Modules: I'm running 4GB + 1GB - system reports 5GB just fine.  I would presume 2 4GB would work as well.

The key is 64bit OS, not the 32bit.

first check this : http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/2dAyeI/www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

I mean you're not happy with T5870 - what applications do you run?

don't get it wrong you and other guys who want to make a cpu upgrade - you lose money:smileywink:

better consider buying your next laptop - with i5 cpu

Hi,

I´m currently using the P8800(2,68GHz/1066MHz with 25w TDP) and 2 of 4GB DDR =8GB - it runs very fine ;)

I also installed an WUXGA Panel with 1920*1200 - note: I have the Nvidia 9300 GPU Chipset not the Intel GMA 4500...

Windows 7 Power index is 6.3 for the CPU and also 6.3 for the RAM.

kind regards from cold germany

Leon
