How to downgrade?

2008-05-27, 13:56 PM
I have a ThinkPad R61i 8943 - DSG

It came with Vista Business installed but was advertised as being able to downgrade to XP Pro.

When it came there were no disks for downgrading and no product key for XP Pro (which was the first thing that annoyed me).  I then managed to get disks from Lenovo for doing the downgrade.

SO I have

1 X Restore & Recovery CD  (bootable)
5 X Windows XP Pro Recovery disks (non-bootable)

If I boot from the recovery CD, none of it's options allow me to restore the XP Pro from the 5 disks and as already pointed out the XP Pro disks are not bootable.

HOW in *%$%& am I meant to get XP Pro on to this **bleep** laptop, I have been at this for 4 hours and Lenovo support seem to want convince me I am lying when I say I have tried what they are telling me at least 10 times and then I get told I have to do a loww level format of the drive, which i have done, but the XP disks are not bootable and the recovery disk insists on putting Vista back on.

Sounds frustrating.
Not knowing what you've exactly been through with support, I'll describe how I run downgrades.

Enter BIOS (F1) and set cd/dvd as first boot device, insert R&R boot cd, press F10 - save, exit, restart and and allow boot from the cd.

After it has loaded the R&R utility I always choose "Restore to Factory" and it copies the R&R cd to the hard drive. When finished it says remove the cd and restart, I press and hold the "on" switch for about 5 secs. or untill it turns off.

Start again and it boots into the R&R utility on the hard drive and eventually requests the supplementary cd - Y/N? If no supplementary cd is at hand I select no and it asks for the first recovery cd, eventually the second etc. etc.

I go through this process several times each week with different TPs and never have a problem.
