IBM R50 - dim then nothing

2008-05-30, 18:25 PM
OK, so my stupid rear knocked my IBM Thinkpad R-50 off my bad, about a 1 1/2 ft drop. Picked it up, it was off, I was thinking it was the HD shock protection, but powered off and back on and I can dimly see the IBM Thinkpad, just BARELY on the screen but never progresses beyond that, and again, super dim.

I did the unhook ac adapter and battery and hold power for 30 sec, no luck.

Made sure HD was still plugged in good, which even if it wasn't it shouldn't affect initial boot. No good. Removed and reseated the RAM chip, no luck....

What's it doing and can I fix it? I've only had it a couple weeks. :(

TIA,

Ryan

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear about your mishap...

Your problem may be related to a damaged motherboard, or a backlight that has been broken/pushed out of place. LCD cable will not dim the screen like that. Damaged inverter might. Three choices...

Depending on your level of skill and knowledge you may or may not want to tackle these issues yourself. What you most certainly should do before even contemplating any repair on your own, is to download Hardware Maintence Manual from the Lenovo's site and see what each of these repairs (forget the motherboard) may bring. An inverter should be fairly easy to locate and replace, and the correct FRU number can be obtained from the HMM. That's where I would begin...

Good luck and let us know.

Cheers,

George
