That sounds pretty much like it yes.

But will this "fiddeling" void the warranty or anything?

I called lenovo, and the guy i spoke to had never even heard about the problem, although tech support wont be back until tuesday... Bloody easter

EDIT: I tried this, and the crackeling noise dissapeared, and the whining got slightly less intense. But it is still there, and very annoying to listen to.

Hello,

I think my problem is the same. When I use the TrackPoint or UltraNav, I can hear some noise from my laptop. It's really annoying!

I'm interested in is there any bugfix or patch from Lenovo that solve this problem?

Re: Intel Processor Whine R61

2008-03-26, 3:13 AM
So from the sounds of another thread below: This one

The R61 was delivered to the service center because of the cpu-whine, the technician couldn't hear the whine at first. So i took him a place slightly more silent, and "woke" up the computer, he noticed it very well when it started. He tried the fix mentioned in the cpu-whine thread, but no effect. He didn't think he could fix the problem, but he took the computer in, he thought i could pick it up again on thursday or friday, so we'll see about the noise then.
Doesn't look like Lenovo cares to fix the issue at all???  This is not looking good.  This noise is so irritating!
From the research I did(as limited as it was) it sounds like an adjustment in the BIOS needs to be made to the second core in the C4 or "Battery operation mode" in relation to minor voltage adjustment<please correct me if I am wrong>.
Relying on other software to do this is _not_ a pretty fix when Lenovo has the resources _and_ documentation to better troubleshoot this than our bunch of "Garage Heros"<myself included>..... UGH!

Same here with my R61i 8932-AEG. When I am on battery power, the noise is audible but quiet. BUT whenever I touch Trackpoint or Touchpad, the noise is much louder. It dissappears when I have something plugged in the USB port. Also on AC power there is no such thing.

On one forum in Czech republic they told that this is caused by the processor clock speed dynamically changing (by reducing CPU core voltage, I think it is called the Intel SpeedStep technology). Turning it off in BIOS solved it for them. But that means higher power consumption and higher system temperature. So clearly, this is not the way to go.

That was from my thread.

I noticed that it is most audible when waking it up, is it the same for you?
I got mine back with a new mobo, but it didn't help too much. The technician said that's all he could do, and if i couldn't live with the sound i would just give it back to the reseller and demand a money-refund.

All,

We are looking into this issue at the present time.

In the interim, you might try the following...

Disable "CPU Power Management" in the BIOS:

1. Power system on.
2. At ThinkPad splash screen, press the F1 button to enter system BIOS.
3. Once in BIOS: Config --> Power --> CPU Power Management --> Disable
4. Once finished, hit F10 and select "Yes" to save your configuration
Setting this option should not negatively affect performance.
This may affect total run time while on battery only.

See if that helps....

Thanks for the update.  I just hope its not lip service! :P

Disabling CPU power management is not a top priority for me.  I will deal with the sound for now.....

Again thanks for the update!

As of yesterday I did a clean install of Vista Business SP1(x32) and one thing I can say is that the "whine" is WORSE in Vista than it ever was in XP Pro.  For those of you who are serious about getting rid of that sound and don't enjoy the Vista experience you can try to utilize the downgrade option from Lenovo while it is available.  I can safely say it is about 60-70% less noticeable with XP vice Vista.

Just some food for thought....
