L13 Gen2 bios 1.08 - Win10 BSOD - RealTek vs Intel driver

2021-04-20, 21:43 PM

Dear Lenovo / community,

today I installed BIOS 1.08 for ThinkPad L13 gen2 non-vPro and it causes sudden Windows errors called WHEA.

Platform: Windows 10 20H2 with April 2021 update (win-update made before BIOS update)

Drivers: latest as of today (as usual)

What is most problably incompatible - Intel GPU driver vs BIOS 1.08 / Embedded Controller FW 1.07.

Once I uninstall Intel GPU drivers in safe-mode, I can at least boot to Win10 and do basic stuff.

Changelog nicely correlates with observed behaviour:

(BIOS ID: R1FET34W) (Tigerlake-U)
-------------------
BIOS:
-Fixed GEN2 dock display issue. (GPP_E18, GPP_E19 need keep Native6.)

Any idea/advice how to roll back to previous BIOS release?

There is no BIOS option to enable booting to DOS, and UEFI ISO Bios 1.06 refuses to flash previous version saying that it is not compatible with my system - wow :).

Re:L13 Gen2 bios 1.08 - Win10 BSOD - RealTek vs Intel driver

2021-04-24, 18:09 PM

From my experience so far:

- fresh Windows 10 20h2 with March 2021 update with most drivers installed except driver for Realtek Card reader - got WHEA BSOD

- fresh Windows 10 20h2 with April 2021 update with most drivers installed except driver for  Realtek Card reader - got WHEA BSOD

- tried to disable device Realtek Media Card Reader in Windows, and also in BIOS - no success, still WHEA BSOD (which previously seems to work, but it was just an illusion)

With BIOS 1.06 and Win10 20H2 + April 2021 update OS is usually working and usable (but crashes with BSOD sporadically - you can find couple of similar WHEA BSOD not only on ThinkPads with your favorite search engine, and couple of mentions on ThinkPads arised circa in November 2020).

Today I had to uninstall Intel Xe Iris GPU, because once drivers kicked in system got BSOD WHEA - again !!

Maybe another attempt to fix this WHEA BSOD (bold font are required steps, but all steps are recommended):

- uninstall Intel Iris Xe GPU drivers via devmgmt.msc (also check "Delete drivers for this device")

- reboot

- open regedit -> HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers

- create new QWord (64bit OS) / DWORD (32bit OS) named "TdrDelay" and set it to Decimal 10 (default is 2 if not set by registry editing)

2 seconds correspond with my observation bacuse first my desktop "freezes" with movable mouse, but nothing can be clicked - no reactions from OS/apps.

Then cca after 2 seconds even mouse cursor freezes on desktop and almost "instantly" I had BSOD WHEA.

- reboot (still VGA drivers here, no video acceleration)

- install Intel Iris Xe GPU drivers from Lenovo

- reboot

- system is working at least for 15-20 minuts without BSOD for now

What's strange that previous BIOS 1.06 everything seems fine - but maybe BIOS 1.08 bugfix revealed another bug/s somewhere else.

Also I do not understand why changing some BIOS settings in 1.08 are not "applied" - only label is changed from enable to disable and vice versa.

Re:L13 G2 buggy bios 1.08 - Win10 BSOD WHEA

2021-04-21, 17:37 PM

Tried today clean installation of Windows 10 20H2 with March 2021 update (integrated inside ISO), and after GPU driver installation system does not freeze. Maybe combination BIOS / KB5001330 / some other driver.

At least I apologize to Lenovo, trying to find the culprit.

Too fast too furious :)

Steps proceeded:

1, install clean win10 20h2 - disconnected from internet

2, install GPU driver for Intel Xe graphics - till here everything seems fine

3, connect laptop to network - Windows behind the scenes tries to download missing drivers - thanks a lot for this functionality Microsoft - it does not even ask a users if he wants to install drivers...

4, after lot of drivers installed system crashes again with WHEA error

Windows was not rebooted in the meantime, only at the end of driver installation it asks for one reboot to finish installation and then crashes / BSOD

Re:L13 Gen2 bios 1.08 - Win10 BSOD - RealTek vs Intel driver

Finally got a culprit - it is Realtek Card Reader driver.

Once I installed driver for Realtek MTD Card Reader Windows crashed in 15-20 seconds with BSOD WHEA error.

What I don't understand is why drivers do not like each other: Intel Xe GPU vs. Realtek card reader

Windows works if you have installed one or another, but not both under BIOS 1.08 - previously it worked fine with BIOS 1.06.

Temporarily I've disabled card reader as I don't use it often.

I am having the same problem, it only works if I uninstall the Intel graphics driver or else it will crash. This is the worse BIOS ever, Lenovo please fix, you should have better quality control than releasing this BIOS.  My computer is almost useless.

Same problem here. Laptop is useless now. Blue screen and restart every 2 min.

Is a rollback of the BIOS a solution? Ik found exe files of older versions, but het the error: Bios image file does not match this system.

Re:L13 Gen2 bios 1.08 - Win10 BSOD - RealTek vs Intel driver

Regarding reverting BIOS back to 1.06:

I tried to rollback with multiple methods (WinFlash32 / WinFlash64 / shellflash.efi) - but each one failed with message: Secure flash authentication failed.

Allright - time to get into BIOS and set "Secure Rollback Prevention" -> Disabled ( see Lenovo allow BIOS rollback )

But despite setting it to "Disabled" reverting BIOS still failed with message mentioned earlier.

Also there is no possibility to boot old fashioned DOS boot disk (USB FreeDOS) because there is no "Legacy boot" in menu, and I tried

lot of times to "Load bios defaults" with "OS Optimized Windows" -> Disabled ... without success.

It looks like / seems to me that BIOS just ignores what user configures in couple of settings and boots machine with its "builtin defaults".

So for now no rollback possible (at least I don't have knowledge how - maybe external flasher but machine is new and warranty will be voided), no Legacy boot option, no CSM enable/disable menu visible...

I also tried burning 1.02 and 1.06 iso on a cd and no luck either. They messed up badly with this BIOS, if they don’t come up with a solution soon I’ll have to call tech support and have it sent for repair.

When I uninstall and disable the realtek card reader, mines still crashes. Even when I disable the card reader in BIOS it still crashes. Only thing that works is using generic video driver and stopping all driver updates.
