Re:L13 Gen2 bios 1.08 - Win10 BSOD - RealTek vs Intel driver

Nothing wrong with the card reader, the BIOS update is causing a conflict with the video and card drivers. They need to issue a new BIOS to fix it. They need to issue refunds if they can’t fix the issue, spent too much time already on it.

Indeed. The men from the first line support has completed the ticket that way; but I am not asking for a new card reader because that is not the problem. It looks they do not want to see the problem. In Belgium, they say I was the first person with this specific problem

@NIKKG at least Lenovo should offer us extended hardware warranty as compensation

@JonasDel they act according to internal procedures/processes - they just replace wrong parts without thinking a bit about problem.

I think that downgrade back won't be possible because BIOS 1.08 ignores settings, and even if we set "Secure rollback prevention" -> Disabled, it is ignored and

once system boots it is still in "Enabled" state despite what is set inside BIOS. Lenovo Bios downgrade

Re:L13 Gen2 bios 1.08 - Win10 BSOD - RealTek vs Intel driver

2021-04-27, 13:39 PM

I had the same problem with my L13 yoga Gen 2 and had two phone calls with the support. At least they confirmed that within the recent days a number of customers contacted the support with the same problem related to a BIOS update to version 1.08. As solution, however, they adviced me to do a system recovery, which I did NOT.

What I did instead:

As I noticed that prior to the BSOD the system produced an unusual amount of heat and fan activity, I entered the BIOS setup and in the section Config -> Power made the following changes: Intel SpeedStep Technology: Off, CPU Power Management: Off, Scheme for AC: Balanced

As a result, the system still showed an unusual amount of fan activity but at least I did not encounter an BSODs with these settings. So in this state it is possible to use the system in order to solve the problem in some better way.

Based on some advice given here, I disabled Realtek PCIE CardReader in the device manager. As a matter of fact disabling the CardReader in BIOS setup does NOT help. As graphics driver I installed the current release from Intel, which is version 20.27.100.9316. With the CardReader disabled I was able to return to the standard power settings in BIOS. The system now appears to behave normal and is stable. As I rarely use the CardReader I can live with this system state until there is some new BIOS or driver version.

Hi! Thanks for your advice. I've tried everything with disabling cardreader - nothing worked for me. Finally tried to turn off speedstep and CPU power management - seemed stable but performance was subpar. Turned on speedstep while leaving cpu management off. Still working fine and the performance seems ok!

I can confirm that suggestion regarding disabling CPU Power management in BIOS seems to "help".

I left Intel Speed-Step technology Enabled.

Official Lenovo drivers for Intel Iris Xe GPU + Realtek Media card reader were installed and system sustained couple of minutes of Prime95 test.

Whats suboptimal is that once CPU Power management is OFF in BIOS then laptop is more noisy+warm.

Actually it is a bit louder but I've stress tested it before bios update and it was completely crazy in how fast it started throttling. CPU was immediately 90C. Now with new bios and power management disabled it performs abnormally well. Cinebench and Furmark for 10 mins with temperatures around 78C and slight throttling (and the pc was totally usable during the test, 22w package power!).

Did the same on my old L380 (i5 8250) - it almost died hah (while 11w package power)
The message is that it's something broken with lenovo bios cpu power management. Disabling it probably will reduce battery life somehow but the performance is amazing.

Yesterday I had another phone call. I told them, that I was able to avoid the BSOD by deinstalling the Card Reader driver.

They said, that they'll give the information to the corresponding developers.

So - let's hope to be able to use our Cart Readers again soon :)

Lenovo just came to install a new motherboard. BIOS back to 1.06 and issues resolved.
