L13 Yoga Gen 2 - USB C Dock only outputs video on 1 USB C Port

2021-02-06, 6:32 AM

We recently purchased some L13 Yoga Gen 2 (20VK0018US) models, and some USB-C Gen 2 Docks (40AS0090US).

We noticed that the new L13 Yoga Gen 2 models only output video to the dock on the usb port that is in the docking connector with the ethernet.

The usb c port with the charger symbol, closest to the hinge, no longer does.

When the dock is connected to this port, all dock features work (ethernet, usb, audio etc,) EXCEPT video output on display port. As soon as the USB C cable is moved to the other port, the monitors function fine.

With the L13 Yoga Gen 1 models, either port could be used to connect to the dock.

We are wondering if this is something that could be fixed with a driver / bios update, or why this was changed. It now creates some confusion and an extra learning step for our users.

Also spent a half hour reinstalling drivers thinking there was something wrong.

L13 Yoga G2

L13 Yoga Gen 2, USB C must be in docking connector for monitors to work. (11th Gen i5)

Thanks,

Brett

Hi @Brett C

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Checking the port description on the manual (page 5-6) shows:

2. USB-C® connector (USB 3.2Gen 2)

3. Thunderbolt™ 4 connector (USB-C)

It appears that the Type C port next to hinge are dedicated to power but do not have DP Alt mode like those in the middle type C port with TB4 features.

Regards,

Hey, thanks for the reply!

Looking at the manual for the G2, 2. does say it can connect to an external display, USB C to DP, but I guess not through the dock with DP-Alt mode?

The only difference I see between 2. & 3. is the addition of thunderbolt. I can see the thunderbolt dock would only work on this port.

Looking at the manual for the G1, looks like very similar specs for 2. , just lower speed / resolution.

Really wish the USB naming convention didn't keep changing, hard to keep track of what ports support what haha.

Re:L13 Yoga Gen 2 - USB C Dock only outputs video on 1 USB C Port

Just wanted to post an update on this.

We do have some L13 Yoga Gen 2 units which will display video through the dock on both USB C ports.

A "defective" unit had the logic board replaced, but it did not resolve the USB C video output issue as posted earlier.
