L13 Yoga shutdown when AC power adapter plugged in

2020-05-11, 13:28 PM

My recently purchased Thinkpad L13 Yoga has developed an issue where it shutsdown when I try and charge it by plugging in the AC adapter into the USB C port. It doesn't seem to happen every time, but I think it is occurring more frequently as time goes on, where I would say at least 80% of the time plugging in the adapter causes a restart.

The behaviour will essentially be that after I plug it in, it will take a few seconds for the battery icon to display that it's charging and as soon as that happens the screen goes black and the laptop has entirely lost power, and now needs to be rebooted from the lenovo start screen.

I haven't been able to notice any correlation between battery state or CPU load or anything and whether or not it occurs. Also, as an attempt to fix it I have set all the parameters of the power plan to be the same for both AC power and battery mode, as I thought it could have something to do with when the computer switches between modes.

I am running Win 10 pro, with all the latest lenovo firmware updates.

Has anybody experienced this problem or know of a probable cause or solution?

I think I have found a fix for this problem. In addition to making the power plan settings the same through the windows menu, I opened the BIOS and set the thermal management scheme and speed step performance settings to be on their lowest/most conservative and the same for AC battery. After a few days of use I have yet to experience the same random shutdown.

Yes I haven't experienced the problem in quite a few months. I think it was eventually resolved through a BIOS update as I have returned my thermal management setting to the defaults and its still ok.
