L15 AMD 2gen, 2 nvme ssd's ?

2021-07-03, 18:16 PM

I just got a brand new L15 AMD Ryzen 7 5850u 2gen ( no SATA drive in, 1 256GB nvme is in))

I would like to add a second nvme in the WWAN socket, M2 2242 size, which seems to be possibel.

In BIOS there are boot settings which give the choice of nvme0 and nvme1.

I got a WD SN520 256GB nvme  ( with B and M keys)

It is not recognize when I place it in 2 M2 socket (M2 2242)

In the M2 2280 socket it works fine.

I have tried a lot things....but no succes yet.

Any ideas ?

Hello Nudch,

Greetings

I suggest that you share the machine type model / MTM (ex. 81C70000RK) from the sticker as it would help us detail more about your machine variant.
Update us soon as convenient.

Regards,
Lorenzo_Lenovo

Hello Knudch,

Sorry for the late reply.

On the same 2242 slot perhaps you should use same single M keyed m.2 PCie NMVe SSD instead as listed here under compatible tab.

https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/ph/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-l-series-laptops/thinkpad-l15-type-20u7-20u8/20u7/20u7001wmx/parts/display/compatible

Thanks for coming back...

A number of things are against your proposal

1. The 2nd M2 socket (WWAN socket) is B keyed so a M keyed card will not fit in there.

2. The 2242 NVMe M2 card I have is (B+M keyed) works in the 1st M2 socket

3. For NVMe SSD, B keyed means it use only 2 PCIe lanes but will work in M keyed socket (If the card is B + M keyed)

4. For NVMe SSD, M keyed cards "CAN" use 4 PCIe lanes but will work with 2 lanes also.

I have a M2 NVMe => USB3 adapter which accept both B and M keyed card but operates them only with 2 PCIe Lanes

Someone would suggest that the WWAN M2 socket is not PCIe.......not very likely because the the WWAN card Lenovo offers is a PCIe card with 2 lanes.

BIOS settings also offers the choice for a 2nd NVMe for example in the boot choices

Quite a mystery

Br

Knud

Hello,

I have an L15 AMD 2gen as well.  It is equipped with WWAN card but I seldom travel to places where it is useful to me.  However I have a 1TB ssd and have not filled it up yet.

Have you reviewed the system hardware manual?   https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-l-series-laptops/thinkpad-l15-gen-2-type-20x7-20x8?linkTrack=Homepage%3ABody_Browse%20Products&searchType=0&keyWordSearch=

Chapter 2 has an interesting note regarding 2nd ssd that might or might not apply to your exact machine.

The sketches for SSD removal and replacement do suggest two different physical shapes of ssd, a short one placed in same space as wwan card and a long one in the diagonally opposite corner of the chassis.

For more detail of field configuration changes perhaps contact Lenovo Technical support team, since the wwan card and short ssd are the same sizes and shapes it would be a practical assembly plant "mistake proofing" protocol to deploy a socket that does not accept the incorrect assembly part....  It is likely the main circuit board is different for WWAN and SSD depolyment.

Also, what things have you already tried?  It might save me some time if I attempt the same change.  :)

Hi

Tested with a M2 sata card....no change

Tested with a The WD SN520 M2 2242 nvme disk which use 2 PCIe lanes B+M keyed, works fine in the M2 2280 socket

Disabled/enabled everything possible thing  in BIOS setting.

Some Thinkpad has a hidden advanced menu...has not found that yet in my machine.

I have read the HW manual several times.

Maybe there is one explanation.... the EM120R-GL WWAN card (acc. to PSREF) has both PCIe connection 1 lane and USB 3 connection

Maybe you could check how it is used....USB or PCIe ?

I dont know which OS you use....

A live Linux would tell a lot details

Hi Knud

WWAN M.2 host connector is defined as Key-B, it can be inserted a B&M key SSD but it works or not depends on the lane design.

L15 AMD Gen2 only has 1 lane for WWAN in hardware design, so B&M key PCIe Gen3x2 lanes SSD does not work on WWAN

Thanks
