L15 Add 2nd drive

2020-07-06, 19:30 PM

Does anybody know how to install a second hard drive in the L15? Ordered it with the i7, Radeon graphics, and PCIe SSD, but as I have a couple 2.5" ssd's, opted for no 2nd drive so I can install my own. It appears to have a 2.5" drive filler case installed, but no cables and I don't know which ports on the motherboard are used for it.

If someone has a 2nd hard drive and could even send a pic of that and where the wires go, that would be very helpful!

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks.

You can see that cable here: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht510449-removal-and-replacement-videos-thinkpad-l15-l15-amd-20u3-20u4-20u7-20u8 when you select "internal storage drive".

That cable has a code on it: NBX0001RR00.

I have the same problem, tried finding this cable but it's not listed in lenovo parts on the website, so I do not have the Lenovo part number. Searching for the code above does not yield any results on ebay, amazon or aliexpress...

Let me know if you manage to buy one.

I bought a connector from Lenovo Thinkpad E475 - NBX0001HY00. The ribbon is a little bit too long, but it works fine. I guess that any Lenovo 14 pin connector will work.

My apologies, I totally forgot to update this post. I got this part: 5C10Z23838 https://encompass.com/item/12564462/Lenovo/5C10Z23838/ and it fit perfectly. The drive has also been working well. Initially, it was backordered and took a couple months to come in, but I don't believe that is an issue any longer.

Cheers!

thanks for the links to the part. manage to find it but cant find lenovo video on how to add 2.5 data to L14/L15.

any video for L15 to take out M2 and put in 2.5 sata disk? it seem m2 slot was part of the mainboard  and stay on top of the 2.5 drive filler :-)

I didn’t need to remove the M.2. There is another small SATA ribbon port on the motherboard right by the blank drive filler thing.

I attached an image of what the inside looks like and circled the ribbon connector along with adding the rough ribbon route in blue.

If you aren’t familiar with laptop internals, there is a plastic filler piece where the 2.5” hard drive belongs. It has a plastic holder around the filler, but it does not need any screws. Just be careful with the plastic tabs and use a thin gift card or small standard screwdriver for removal. It’s not hard, but one just needs to be careful.

Also, be sure to use a table with plenty of space and ensure you have discharged any static on your body from walking around. Linus recently did a video on that and it doesn’t seem to be much of an issue as things are grounded well, but it is always best to avoid it in the first place.
