L490 Storage Upgrade Options

2020-05-17, 21:03 PM

I have a L490 (20Q50021UK) which is the SSD M.2 2280 hard drive and no WWAN option.

I am looking at adding additional storage and the Hardware Manual refers to the "WWAN card* or M.2 solid-state drive in the WWAN-card slot* or M.2 Intel Optane memory* in the WWAN-card slot" and it also shows how to remove it in that document.

The Platform Specifications also refer to "M.2 2242 SSD / PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x 2" in the storage section.

Finally if you go back to the configuration page when purchasing, it gives you to option to add a "128GB Solid State Drive, M.2 2242, PCIe-NVMe, TLC" as a second hard drive, which removes the option to select the WWAN.

So all good, I just need a M.2 2242 Form Factor - PCIe NVMe 3.0 x2 Interface

However, I can't find a size mentioned other that 128GB from the configuration page. Does anyone not what the limit is, why only 128GB listed?

Has anyone else put a SSD into the WWAN slot and got it working? if so what was the details please?

Using the link above, I searched for a Compatible Solid State Drive only two choices for 256G 2242. I couldn't find any listed to purchase in the UK but managed to find one of the "Substitutes" part no 00UP651 for sale in the UK. Arrived, fitted, initialized and formatted via disk management.

M.2 2280 SSD was put into carrier and placed at HDD slot; if you want to add another M.2 SSD,you have to choose M.2 2242 SSD and place it into WWAN slot

In the end I found the answer in the link below

https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/gb/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-l-series-laptops/thinkpad-l490-type-20q5-20q6/20q5/parts/display/compatible

The max size listed is 256G for the 2242 PCIe3x2.

Again, has anyone else put a SSD into the WWAN slot and got it working? if so what was the details?

Re:L490 Storage Upgrade Options

Hello,

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad L490 (20Q5001YFR). I upgraded the M.2 2280 SSD from 256GB to 512GB in the 2.5 "bay.

I have the WWAN slot (M.2 2242 M-key) which is available and tried to install an SSD "Samsung 256 GB PM991 M.2 2242 42 mm PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe MZALQ256HAJD-000L2 MZ-ALQ2560" an SSD in it which is an M.2 2242 M-key

However, the computer seems to have power, but nothing is displayed, it does not start and the power button remains on.

The documentation (https://psref.lenovo.com/Detail/ThinkPad/ThinkPad_L490?M=20Q5001YFR) clearly indicates :
- 1x 2.5 "HDD / SSD + 1x M.2 2242 SSD
- 1x M.2 2242/2280 SSD + 1x M.2 2242 SSD

I am in the second situation.

Would there be a setting in UEFI. ?
