L540 RAM Upgrade

2018-01-31, 21:28 PM

Hello,

I would like to know if from a reliability or performance point of view, it is better to add a 4GB memory stick to the existing 4GB or to replace them with a 8GB memory stick ?

Tank you.

Actually, there is some small advantage using 2 x sticks because of dual channel mode, but you won't notice that on L540.

Why not to add 8GB stick? 12GB RAM configuration is supported and even dual channel mode will be enabled.

Why the dual-channel with two sticks will not work on my L540, Kacperas seems to say that  is possible ?

Regards.

I didn't say it won't work. I said that you won't notice any difference in performance between dual and single channel. Also, if you can buy 8 GB RAM stick, you can place it with existing 4 GB and have 12 GB RAM total, in dual channel mode. You don't need to have sticks with idendical memory capacity.

I would like to be sure before buying 8GB. Maybe You can tell me how to activate the dual-channel?

Regards.

Don't worry, motherboard will enable it automatically. You can check it later with some application like CPU-Z, Aida, etc...

Inspect which stick you have at this moment and try to buy similar stick (frequency and latency/timings).

Ok, I'm not an expert, but I would like to know if I will notice better performance using 8GB or 12GB?

And if some parameters have to be changed on the machine?

Regards.

If you know the serial number of machine, you can check all components on this link. After you find your stick, check the pictures and see the frequency (should be 1600 Mhz), but also check timings (CLx) and if it's single or dual ranked (1xRx or 2xRx).

I'd say that capacity makes more sense on this machine than speed.

And you don't have to set anything. Just plug your stick and turn on the machine. Of course, your machine has to be unplugged (both battery and AC) when your're adding a stick.
