L540: Reinstalled Windows 8.1, How do I update Lenovo BIOS & Drivers?

2021-01-03, 23:40 PM

Hello, As the title states, I have a ThinkPad L540 which is mostly still going strong.

I made a fresh reinstallation of Windows 8.1 (from the original DVDs) on a new SSD.

When I open Lenovo's System Update - Update and Drivers, it tells me "There are no applicable packages found for your system."

How should I update BIOS, Lenovo Drivers etc., which are now reset to 2013/2014?

(The Lenovo Vantage app does not seem to be the solution, as it is for systems that already are upgraded to Win 10.

I might upgrade to Win 10 in the future if it looks trouble free to do so. Otherwise I'm fine with 8.1 at this point.)

You may have to go to https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-l-series-laptops/thinkpad-l540 and manually update the drivers if you are missing any.

The  BIOS version will not have changed since that data is stored in the BIOS itself, and not on the HDD.

It may be that Windows installed the latest drivers for your system via Windows Update since no new Windows 8.1 drivers have been released for the L540 in over a year or more.

If everything is working like it should, I would go with the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" and just enjoy the reinstalled OS.
