L540 shuts down/starts up OK but WILL NOT RESTART

2014-05-19, 18:55 PM

I have a new L540 that arrived inoperatve - power button did not work. Sent it back to depot, and after 2 weeks received it back with a new system board and 3 other parts replaced. After loading Windows 7 without any problems, the first time I went to reboot I found that it hangs after shutting down - in other words, it appears to be shut down, but backlight is still on and there it sits, until I hold power button for 4 seconds. I can hear (very faintly) 5 short beeps as soon as it is down. If I try it in safe mode, the 5 beeps are at full volume.

If I choose "shutdown," it shuts down fine, and comes back up fine after hitting the power button. No difference whether it is on battery, AC, or AC with no battery installed.

I have done all updates including the BIOS, no difference. I have pulled the CMOS battery to reset BIOS settings to defaults. Clues anyone? Thanks.

Yes - it went back to depot service, and the system board was replaced. It is fine now.

Just to rule out any OS or driver issue, I'd suggest you try to enable boot logging in the F8 menu (where you can also enable Safe Mode). Which will cause Windows to log both the startup and the shutdown or restart process to C:\BOOTLOG.TXT.

Then try to restart the system. When it hangs, power it down and power it up again, but this time do NOT enable boot logging (it would overwrite the file you just created). Then have a look at the last few lines of BOOTLOG.TXT - if there is no obvious sign about some driver that is about to be unloaded at that time or you are unsure, you can post the last couple of lines here.

Hello and thank you. I tried your suggestion, but there are a few problems with this -

  • the file is not named "bootlog.txt," it is "nbtlog.txt" and it is in the /windows folder
  • it is not overwritten, it is appended, I can see all the times I tried enabling it
  • it does not log anything while shutting down, only while starting up

Also, how can anything happening in the OS cause the 5 beeps? I believe this is a symptom exclusive to Lenovo hardware.

The Hardware Maintenance Manual for L540 contains some information about beep codes, but this one

Five short beeps:

Shut down the computer immediately and have the computer serviced.

is not very informative in my opinion. But seems that you are right and it is some hardware issue.

So sorry, no more ideas :(

We have a L440 with the same problem. It developed sometime within the last 3 months. There was a bios update to 1.60 during this time but I don't know if it caused the problem. Has there been any resolution?

I remove the battery from my L440 and reinstalled. The failure to restart problem went away.
