L570 - Can the laptop handle two drives (NVMe & 2.5" SSD)??

2018-03-23, 19:59 PM

Hello all,

I'm new on this site so old timers go easy on me! I had a general question that I have searched for high and low but cannot seem to get a direct answer.  Our company recently purchased 7th gen intel L570 laptops with the included 500GB HDD. Now I see on the L570 datasheet that some come with a m.2 PCIe NVMe. My question - Can I add a sencond drive (m.2) along with the factory 500Gb HDD 2.5"? I want to put the OS on the M.2 while leaving the HDD as storage for our users.

Can anyone help me on this? Can the lenovo l570 take two drives (m.2NVMe and 2.5"SSD)?

Thank you for your helping me out!

Does no one have information that pertains to the L570 and having two drives (m.2 nvme and 2.5" SSD)?

I am surprised that no one would have this information or be able to help me?

Hi,

I don't have direct experience but from what I read the HDD and PCIe SSD are mutually exclusive.  One or the other in the main bay.

However,  it looks like you can add a 2242 m.2 SATA SSD in the WWAN slot if it's empty.

http://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad%20L570/ThinkPad_L570_Platform_Specifications.pdf

Some: HDD / SATA 6.0Gb/s, 2.5" wide, 7mm high, Active Protection System
Some: SSD / SATA 6.0Gb/s, 2.5" wide, 7mm high (e.g. xxxGB SSD)
Some: M.2 SSD / PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x 2, 16Gb/s
Some: 128GB M.2 SSD / SATA 6.0Gb/s, in WWAN slot as 2nd Storage,
mutually exclusive with WWAN

Thank you for the information. It does appear that the 2242 WWLAN is "exclusive" slot if not occupied. I am still very much interested in finding out if the M.2 NVMe slot as well as the 2.5" slot can be occupied/utilized at the same time.

This information would alter how my hardware specs a great deal! Does anyone else have any knowledge on the topic?

There is a small inaccuracy. Both 2.5" drive (eiter HDD or SSD) and m.2 2280 NVME PCIe SSD occupe the same slot / connector on the motherboard. I.e.these drives are mutually exclusive, can't be fitted at the same time. The difference is m.2 2280 NVME PCIe SSD needs additional btracket / adapter, FRU 01AY477, the photo

So, the PSREF' information isn't clear as there isn't a statement about 2.5" slot and the drives for that one..

Re: L570 - Can the laptop handle two drives - Dual mounted 2280 M.2 function in 2.5" SSD/HDD slot?

2018-03-29, 13:24 PM

That information is helpful Thank you!

I have one more question - Would a Dual mounted 2.5" M.2 2280 adapter work in this  SSD/HDD slot? Bandwith may take a hit but I think this solution should work in theory? Your thoughts here?

This is the part I am wondering about:

I know about such adapters, not only Startech's. It might work, why not. Especially if it doesn't need the OS drivers.
The only disadvantage and concern IMHO is the SSDs cooling within the adapter and laptop.

Re: L570 - Can the laptop handle two drives (NVMe & 2.5" SSD) CONFIRMED you can add two drives!

2018-04-16, 23:48 PM

I wanted to respond to my original post. I can verify that the Lenovo L570 can handle to drives. One in the sata and one m.2 2242 wwlan spot.  The only thing I had to do in order to get the 2242 work correcly was enable the Legacy boot by disabling secure boot in the bios settings. I loaded the OS on 2242 and now have a seperate storage drive for my other programs, pictures, documents etc..

Hello!
Thank you for your informative post. This is exactly what I would like to do. Can you give any information as to the 2242 drive you used? When I search for 2242 drives, they all show pictures of mSATA drives, which I understand wouldn't work.
Thank you!

No problem!

You definitley need m.2 2242 - See link below for the exact model I purchased. You can use that as reference to pick out your specidic make/size.

One Piece of advice since I assume you will be using two drive, disconnect all storage drives except for the 2242 if that's where the OS will be installed. Make sure the secondary drive (SSD,HDD) doesnt contain boot partition or the pc will default to it.

Hopefully that helps!

Thanks!
