PROJECT: Pimp a Lenovo L530 with more recent hardware from other Lenovos

2020-09-27, 12:01 PM

Dear all,

This is just a fun project but could be also useful for some to prolong the life of some laptops.

I have a Lenovo L530 2481 2gs with the following configuration:

Prozessor: Intel Core i5-3210M (2x 2,5 GHz / 3 MB Cache / 64-bit / 35 Watt)

Familie: Intel Core i5 Mobile (3. Generation) 2 Kerne (Dual-Core)

RAM: 16 GB DDR3

Disk drive: Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB + replacement of the optical drive with the original 1TB HHD

Netzwerkkarte: 10/100/1000 MBit/s Gigabit-Ethernet Adapter

Wireless LAN: Thinkpad Wireless LAN 802.11b/g/n (draft)

WWAN / UMTS: WWAN (UMTS) Modul aufrüstbar

Bluetooth: integrated

Integrated HD frontal camera

1xExpressCard Slot/54 (juts the place, the reader itself is not there)

Prozessorgrafik: Intel HD 4000

I'd like to upgrade all the possible components ordering replacement (used) hardware. Especially for the wifi adapter, the Bluetooth, and the graphic card would be great to find some more recent hardware that fits. Any idea on which models are compatible?

As an example, this wifi module should work on the more recent L560. Would it fit?

Thank you!

I believe that the L530 is of an age where the wifi whitelist was still enforced.  Unless you install a wifi card from the compatible list - that also has a Lenovo FRU - the laptop will refuse to boot.

As to graphics, as far as I know all the L530 models used in-CPU graphics.  No discrete option, and even if there was it would be a chip soldered to the planar, not a "card".

The Whitelist is indeed enforced on the L530 unfortunately. Just tried this with the latest BIOS, I'm unable to add any "normal" Intel card and now have to order the special older one which is whitelisted. Very frustrating.
