R400 Wirless LAN not installing

2010-01-31, 6:40 AM

HI,

I have purchased a new Thinkpad R400. Windows Visat Business was preinstalled and Wireless LAN was available and wriless internet was working fine. I downgraded Vista Business to Windows XP Professional and it is not detecting Wireless LAN or witrelss adapter even though drivers from Lenovo side are downloaded for this purpose.

Any solution please?

Thanks

Hello Frank,

Thanks for your solution.  It was resolved as mentioned in your following email.

Press Esc a couple of times to get back to main BIOS Setup menu

Go to Security: I/O Port Access

Make sure that Wireless LAN is Enabled

Actually in the Security I/O Port Access Wireless LAN was not enabled when I got it enabled it worked.

Thanks for your help and resolution

Hi gqmallah,

Welcome to the Lenovo forum! :smileyhappy:

Are you still having the problem with your R400's wireless LAN? If so, could you please post your ThinkPad's Type-model number (7 digits XXXX-yyy from label on bottom)?

Best regards,

Frank

Hi gqmallah,

Here is the latest Windows XP driver for the Intel WiFi card in your R400:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-70504

I'd recommend:

1) Go to Control Panel: Add/Remove Programs and remove ThinkVantage Access Connections, if you find it there.

2) Download the above Intel WiFi driver and follow the Manual Install instructions at the above page to install it.

Good luck!

-Frank

Hello Frank,

I am not successful after following the procedures mentioned in your above message and even I went through the manual instructions of the driver installation.  I do not know what wireless/wifi adapter is used by my model of the laptop when I browse  the INF file it brings back list of  driver which is conflicting with the my laptop's card.

Can you please tell me what to do in this situation?

To determine which wireless card is installed in your ThinkPad, you can try this:

  1. Start: Control Panel: Administrative Tools: Computer Management
  2. In left pane, expand the System Tools folder and click Device Manager
  3. In right pane, expand Network Adapters
  4. Double-click the network adapter that you think is your wireless adapter -- if driver is not properly installed, it might be called something weird. On my R61 with Atheros WiFi it's called "11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Express Adapter"
  5. Click the Details tab and select "Device Instance ID" from the drop-down.
  6. An ugly-looking string appears in the window below. On mine I see "PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_1014...". That means Vendor 168C and Device ID 1014. Googling "vendor 168C device 1014" pops up a bunch of info about Atheros cards. You will almost certainly pull up different Vendor and Device IDs. Your ThinkPad's Type-model number indicates that it should have Intel WiFi, but maybe there's a different card in there for some reason.

Please report the Vendor and Device IDs you find in step 6. Through a combination of Google and the good people in this forum, we should be able to figure out which WiFi card you have installed. :smileyhappy:

Best regards,

Frank

A couple of things to check:

Is the wireless adapter enabled in BIOS?

Press F1 at the ThinkPad boot screen to get to BIOS Setup Utillity.

Go to Config: Network

Make sure that Wireless LAN Radio Frequency is On

Press Esc a couple of times to get back to main BIOS Setup menu

Go to Security: I/O Port Access

Make sure that Wireless LAN is Enabled

Press F10 to save settings and exit BIOS Setup

Is the wireless hardware ok?

Download and "Burn image to CD" the PC Doctor DOS boot CD.

Boot your R400 from it.

Select Diagnostics: Wireless LAN

Click "Run Screen"

Do the tests pass?
