R500 doesn't boot

2008-12-27, 18:23 PM

Hi, since today my recent laptop (R500 2008-10-23) won't boot.

When I press the start button it does pretty much nothing.

I can hear the hard drive act, the lights (CAPS lock, NUM lock and the 'turned Z in a circle') go on, the first two go back out, the third one stays on. After about 5 seconds the 'Z' goes of too and all three jump back on and again the first two go back out, now the 'Z' stays on, as well as I can hear the hard drive act.

For all this time my screen doesn't do a thing, the usual beep isn't there.

I've tested it with external screen, with and without battery, with and without DVD drive, with and without harddisk.

I've tested the harddisk in my desktop and it works fine.

Problem occurred after the laptop went into sleep mode last night (moon light) because the battery ran out, this morning I forgot all about the battery so I booted without power cord, I realized my mistake so I plugged it in but it wouldn't boot.

Can anybody help?

Anyone?

Maybe someone can tell me where the battery on the mainboard is located, maybe that would do some good?

@ Jonas,

Please try the following with the battery and power cable removed; press and hold the the start button 10 times for 5 seconds, the last time for 15 seconds. Then attach your power cable, not the battery, press and hold the F1 key pressed while you press the start button, do not release the F1 key. Hopefully the system will start, maybe with a beep, and when / if it beeps or you see the BIOS splash screen you can release F1.

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately that doesn't do the trick, tomorrow I'm gonna call the helpdesk and hopefully they can help, if not I'll have to take it to a dealer.

Well, someone solved it, but I don't know what the problem really was. I had to send it in to their RMA center.

I know for sure it wasn't the battery, adapter or harddisk, cause I kept those here.

I'm sorry I can't give a more usefull answer.

Maybe they changed RAM.

I base this on a thread at: http://www.thinkpads.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=76954

Just a guess.

I had exactly same problem and it was fixed on-site at my place. Serviceman changed whole motherboard (part number 63Y1442).

I have the same problem too, with two R500 bought the same time !

The same week they both stop functionning, with some days of difference.

I've tried to remove the ram and there is no bip... The PC doesn't seem to boot at all and doesn't detect there is no ram !

If the issue is to replace the two mainboards of this PC it will cost a lot.... !
