R52 fails to display kanji

2009-11-02, 9:52 AM

I'm baffled by this problem, so your help will be most appreciated.  Here, below, is detail from a personal Web page of mine.  Where, pray tell, did the kanji go?  What's with the little squares containing numbers?  They're supposed to be - and used to be - kanji!

My Compaq Presario 5WV270, running on Ubuntu Jaunty and with either Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox, displays the kanji.  My Toshiba Tecra S1, running on Windows XP Professional and with either of the above-mentioned browsers, displays the kanji.  Yet my IBM Lenovo R52 1847 CTO ThinkPad, running on XP Pro and with either of those browsers, does not.

What, if anything, am I doing wrong; or is this a problem inherent in the machine and/or its software?  Help!  Thanks.

As I discovered, George, Lenovo is blameless in this matter.  It's the fault of Microsoft, which fails to post the mysteriously-missing language program on its download site.  Consequently, I must now resort to sub rosa methods.  I guess Bill Gates hasn't enough money, but then neither have I.

Hardware it's NOT.

You're missing some type of support, for language or whatever....

Try booting R52 from a "live" Linux disk and these will likely pop up...

Cheers,

George

George, I don't want to install a different operating system just so I can see kanji!  I'll go search the Web for possible solutions.

That's why I said "boot from a live CD"...no installation required, but you'd eliminate the hardware issue...

Good luck with your search, I wish I could guide you in the right direction, but I can't on this one...

Cheers,

George
