R61 Graphics Card Issue

2014-08-10, 20:23 PM

Hello,

My R61 could not start this morning. There was 3 beeps, a long one followed by two short ones, when I pressed the power button. I looked through the internet and started to know this is a common problem for this serious, namely an issue related to the defection of the graphics card. I also learned that a possible solution is to replace a new motherboard.

My question is, will lenovo offer a FREE motherboard replacement or other solutions? My warranty has been out dated.

The MTM is 7755-A46.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum

That beep code can mean one of the following problems:

I don't think you will get a free replacement, since the support for these models is probably EOL, but you can try anyway...

You can try to get an Intel board, could you post your 7 digit MTM code? You can find it in a black & white sticker on the bottom of the laptop.

Thank you, Tasurinchi.

The MTM code is added onto the original post.

Thanks, unfortunately the support site is under maintenance and I cannot retrieve the original configuration of your laptop.

I was asking this in order to tell you which motherboard you could buy to replace your current broken one. It will basically depend if your machine is a 14.1", 15" or 15.4" model.

Could you post a picture of your laptop and the resolution of your screen? Thanks a lot in advance!

Again, thanks.

My R61 is with 14-inch screen, but I am not sure about the resolution.

My initial thought was, if there is no free service from lenovo, I will buy a new laptop. After all, this one is over 6 years.

Then it's better to contact the Lenovo support or check your warranty status. I really doubt there will be a planar replacement for free, but you never know  ;-)

I have checked my warranty. It was expired in 2009. I was just wondering if Lenovo will be responsible for this. As I said, it is a common problem for R61 series.

its more than 7 years old. I don't think Lenovo even keep the parts around for ThinkPad after 5 years. The motherboard is relatively cheap to replace. You can get a relatively good nick R61 for about 100 to 150 USD.
