RAM upgrade for L440

2020-01-19, 10:40 AM

Hi, I have a L440 thainkpad type 20AT. I bought this laptop new with 8GB of RAm installed, the memory module is installed in the bottom slot on the machine - the slot furthest from the motherboard and I believe the part number is 03X6657.

I am trying to upgrade to 16GB with the addition of another 8GB module and have bought and returned 8GB modules from Crucial and Kiningston, the modules they supplied did not work with the laptop.

Both the supllied modules when installed in conjunction with the original caused the laptop not to boot up, but both worked when installed in the in the bottom slot without the original module present.

I have run diagnostics on the laptop and checked for updates, makes no difference and no faults were found.

my thoughts are that either the memory slot nearest the motherboard is faulty, or that the two moduls I bought were not fully compatible with the original memory module.

If anyone has any advice I'll be very pleased to receive it.

Hi ian-c!

Welcome to our forums community.

The computer should be able to detect it as long as the specs of the memory is the same as the photo below:

As it was stated in the product reference: http://psref.lenovo.com/Product/ThinkPad_L440.

However, here are the listed part compatible with your machine: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/ph/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-l-series-laptops/thinkpad-l440/20at/parts/display/compatible. You can refer to the photo below for the part numbers.

You can also use the substitute part numbers in searching for the part. I hope this helps.

Regards

Hi, I have the new memory module (which arrived in a lenovo Box with the right part number on it), but with the original module and the new one installed the laptop will not boot up. however it works ok with either of the modues in the bottom slot but not with them in the slot nearest the motherboard.

The laptop is fully up to date with BIOS and drivers and so I have to assume that either a memory card slot or the motherboard is faulty and given that the laptop is 6 years old I do mot wish to spend a lot repairing it.

There is a possible problem with the slot itself. Try cleaning it, make sure that there are no foreign objects, use an air can cleaner and spray it in one direction, and make sure there are no bent pins.
