%SystemDrive% ?

2008-03-06, 1:38 AM
On my new R61i there is a folder on the Desktop (XP) labelled %SystemDrive%. The first subdirectory is "Documents and Settings", the next has my full name, then "Application Data", then "Microsoft", and so on.

I'm wondering what this is for and whether I can delete it safely.

(If it is for the Microsoft Office trial, I have already rid my system of that.)

%SystemDrive% itself is just a system variable and sort of abbreviation/shortcut which is used commonly in scripts and programs  to point to the drive where your windows operation system is installed on. Normally there shouldn't appear such a named path folder on the desktop, if all things went well during installation/deinstallation processes of software, but sometimes if something related to software installation/deinstallation goes wrong, then this folder appears on the desktop.

If you can safely delete the "Microsoft" contents under the "Application Data" path depends on it's contents, since there are usually a bunch of different Microsoft software related entries under this folder. If you can identify unwanted leftovers from the Microsoft Office deinstallation, then you  can delete those (and only those) leftovers, otherwise you should just hide the complete folder path from your desktop.

You can also take a look at references on the net related to this theme...
