ThinkPad L14 BIOS: Power-On Password didn't work

2021-04-05, 5:52 AM

Hi,

Have an issue with ThinkPad L14 Gen1 (20U50007RT). When I apply:

Supervisor Password - Enabled

Password at Unattended Boot - Enabled

Power-On Password - Enabled

I expecting that after each power-on my notebook will prompt to put a password to start. But this is not working (only for the first time).

All BIOS settings by default, except described above.

BIOS version: R19ET33W (1.17)

This is a bug or I do something wrong because at all previous ThinkPad's (E460, L490) this settings works fine.

Please advice.

Thanks!

Hello SergiiS,

Greetings

Kindly try loading the BIOS default settings, be sure to save and exit.
Then try setting those passwords again, save and exit.

Update us how it goes

Regards,

Hi Lorenzo, I already done it initially, but gets the same behaviour. By my opinion this is a bug. Please feel free if you need any additional information. Thanks! With regards, Sergii.

Any changes? Because this functionality is critical for me. Thanks!

Hi Sergiis

I tested my L14 AMD system with same BIOS V1.17 but was not able to replicate the issue.

Could you double confirm if Embeded controller version is 1.14 in your system?

Could you try to remove those password and save, and then enter BIOS password to re-set password to test?

is there any special setting or operation to replicate issue?

Could you share a screenshot of password page?  I share password page of my system as below

Thanks.

BTW, you expect to have password input before restart or cold boot? You can enable password at resart in BIOS setup. Thanks.

Hi Davey,

Could you double confirm if Embedded controller version is 1.14 in your system?

- Yes. BIOS - 1.17, EC - 1.14

Could you try to remove those password and save, and then enter BIOS password to re-set password to test?

- Already do it initially

is there any special setting or operation to replicate issue?

- I will provide all materials at this weekend (videos, screenshots, drivers versions, OS, BIOS, etc)

you expect to have password input before restart or cold boot?

- When cold boot

I think notebook does not fully turn-off when I click power off, so at next load does not prompt password request and USB ports still active for charge

Thanks for your assist!

Hi

What's already done, but without any luck:

Re-set password, disable\enable

Set up BIOS to default settings

Revert BIOS to v1.16

Change SSD with fresh Win10

Turn off notebook with pressed Shift button

Disable build-in battery and after it start notebook with AC adapter

So nothing can help

Already prepare video - https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/160hM0j8tRBr3XhJ0bKmd91hFZZ2kqn4U?usp=sharing

Thanks!

Hi Sergiis

Thanks for your pictures and video.

I have seen the video your replicated issue but I didn't replicate issue on my system with same setting in BIOS,  we will try to get a same hardware configuration system as yours to test. Thanks.

Hi

Thanks for your answer. Already prepare small report about soft/hardware configuration. Maybe it will be helpful.

Thanks!
