Thinkpad L14, M.2 2242 SSD in WWAN

2020-12-23, 11:14 AM

Dear all

We recently purchased L14 (20U1) due to the fact that acording PSREF and Maintenance Manual there is the possibility to add a second SSD in the WWAN slot.
I now have some of them in my office and tried to upgrade them with WD PC SN520 (512GB, M.2 2242) but withou success. The L14 will not recognize them. BIOS is 1.07.

Did I miss soemthing?

Please advise!

Hi,

I just took a quick look at the PSREF document and HMM.  I don't see any indication that the WWAN slot will support an SSD.

Per the spec, two drives are supported: a 2.5 inch drive and an m.2 drive - either 2280 or 2242 - but in the m.2 slot for storage, not the WWAN slot.

Please clarify where you saw WWAN/SSD support for this model. Perhaps I missed it.

Z.

Hi again

Please see attached extracts of the PSREF and the HWMM.

By my opinion it should be possible. But English is not my mother tongue and therefore there is a potential of misunderstanding when reading spec sheets.

I stand corrected.  After a more careful look at psref and hmm it does appear that m.2 2242 in the WWAN slot should be possible.  No idea why it isn't recognized, and apologies for the misinformation.

If I may, let me try again...  In what way/where is the new SSD not recognized?  In BIOS?  The boot menu?  Disk Management?  Windows Explorer?  All of them?

If you are only looking via Windows Explorer you probably need to go to Disk Management and initialize/partition/format the drive.

Hi

I hope you had a nice X-Mas.

Your support is very welcome!

Neither the BIOS nor when scanning the PCIe Bus with a bootbale tool the SSD will be recoginzed.

It seems that it will not be detected by the system. I tried with a second SSD in another L14 to reduce the possibility of defects not beeing detected. But nothing helps.

Re:Thinkpad L14, M.2 2242 SSD in WWAN

Hi

MTM is 20U1-000YMZ.

Last week I had contact with Lenovo Switzerland and they advised me to use a SSD which is listed here: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/hr/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-l-series-laptops/thinkpad-l14-type-20u1-20u2/20u1/20u1000ymz/pf1t8gdp/parts/display/compatible

I have then ordered one which is listed as 00UP652; 512G,M.2,2242,PCIe3x2,TOS,STD to try it. Today I got the 00UP652 and it is also not beeing recognized by the system.

Any idea? I guess it should be listed as NMVe1? Are there any BIOS settings which I have to change?

Thank you for further support.

Hello,

Sorry for the delay and am also sorry to report that your system type is unable to support two SSDs, to be more specific cannot support SSDs in the WWAN slot. Engineers have informed me that in 2019 there was an SSD interface upgrade made which is not compatible with the WWAN slot.

Again, apologies that this probably isn't what you wanted to read.
