Thinkpad L530 internal key board misses keys when docked

2021-03-27, 17:28 PM

My Thinkpad L530 works fine when undocked with all keys on the internal keyboard working OK. However, when docked onto my "Lenovo Mini-dock series 3 with USB 3.0" type 4337 the L530's internal keyboard stops typing characters in the central section of the keyboard i.e.  the 6,7,y,u,h,j,n,m keys. This has been getting steadily worse over recent months having just start missing the 6 and 7 keys..

Using the on-screen keyboard works fine when docked and so does a Logitech wifi to USB keyboard with the dongle in the L530 USB port.

Undocking the L530 brings all the keys back to life. Any clues out there?

Hello Prouter,

Welcome to Lenovo Community

I suggest that you share the machine type model / MTM (ex. 81C70000RK) from the sticker as it would help us detail more about your machine variant.

Also check for BIOS and driver updates thru the support site

Update us how it goes.

Regards,

Hi Lorenzo,

The Thinkpad L530 is type 2481-CTO with S/N R9-v590N 12/10

The port replicator is a Thinkpad Mini Doc Series 3 with USB 3.0, type 4337 with S/N ******** 12/10.

Note that this combination has been working OK for years then the 6 and 7 keys started to fail then further keys in the central section of the keybaord started to fail over some months. I feared that the keyboard needed replacing until I undocked the laptop and found that the keyboard worked fine when undocked. Docking and undocking repeatedly show the same state - OK when un-docked and failing when docked.

My drivers and Bios are automatically updaterd and are up-to-date I believe but I will check.

Prouter

Edit notes: removed SN for to prevent abuse , Machine Type Model:2481CTO - spidey101

Checking on the Smart finder did not show the ThinkPad Mini Doc Series 3 with USB 3.0, type 4337 listed as compatible.

Have you likewise tried updating any docking station's firmware too?
Was there are changes like Windows update before you started to have this issue?
I was thinking of system restore to jump back to a previous working configuration but I suggest that you backed all your files first before any steps.

Hi Lorenzo,

This docking station may not be in the compatibilty list but I have been using it for many years with the L530 with no problems until recent months. The keyboard degredations started slowly with just the 6 & 7 keys sometimes missing then over time the malfunction spread to other keys in the central section of the keyboard.

Windows is automatically being updated and I have no memory of the first keyboard malfunction so can't pin it down to any particular update.

Don't know if this docking station has firmware to be updated but I will check that out.

Regards

   Chris

Hi Lorenzo,

Just tried the L530 off the Mini Dock and the same keys are failing so I guess my previous off-dock when the keyboard appeared to working OK results were misleading.

Looks like it is the keyboard that is failing after all.

Sorry to waste your time on this issue but thanks anyway.

Regards

Chris.
