Thinkpad L590 overheats

2021-06-06, 13:13 PM

Hi,

My device overheats all the time. I cannot hear the fan turning except when booting. Warranty has just expired. In Videocalls the device overheats until freezing entirely.

Would be grateful for any piece of advice.

Best,

Josh

Hi there,

If you're comfortable with working on the insides of a laptop, I would recommend checking the fans to clean out any dust built up.  Here's the service manual for your machine, page 85 is for the fan: https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/tp_l490-l590_hmm_en.pdf

I have the exact same problem. On Windows, the fan only works on very high temps, like 70C but in any case it causes the laptop to get really hot, including the keyboard..

Same thing happens on Linux, fan never starts and cpu throttles at 70C, i could only get the fan spinning using a 3rd party program (ThinkFan) but I think it's not an optimal solution. Without ThinkFan, the fan never starts on Linux.

I already checked in BIOS i have power mode set to Max Performance when plugged but the fan still doesn't spin on its own.

At this point I think it's intentional, maybe to save power.

As far as I can see more people have this problem and there seems to be no solution yet, since the fan itself is working (while booting) but it just does not get active under load.

At least in my case.

So its not a hardware problem.
