Warranty Start Date for ThinkPad?

2009-05-11, 3:50 AM

I purchased my R-61 from Buy.com on 5/5/2008 and received it 5 days later on 5/10/2009.

Friday afternoon (5/ 8/2009) my computer went down and will not boot or anything.

I checked online (using my model and serial #) and learned that Lenovo says my warranty began 3/23/2008, the date of manufacture, but since that was 2 months before I even ordered or received my computer that seems a bit unfair.

Can anyone tell me if my warranty has really expired, if it starts when I place the order, or starts when I actually receive the computer from the retailer from who I purchased it?

Thanks,

Bob

Welcome to the forum!

You might have a good case to get your machine serviced under warranty if you have the paperwork proving that you bought the machine as brand new on the given date.

Normally, the warranty period begins when the unit gets shipped. Having said that, I've never purchased a new ThinkPad from a place like Buy.com so I wouldn't know how Lenovo would treat such a purchase.

Good luck.

Cheers,

George

Thanks for the prompt opinion!

I decided to re-configure the machine exactly as bought (512Mb memory vs. the 4Gb I installed when I purchased the computer), and darned if it didn't boot right up.

I added each of the 2Gb chips one at a time, and found that one of them, when gently flexed, would give me the "blue screen of death" and shut the computer down.

I'd never seen bad memory prevent a computer from starting the boot process at all before, but thankfully that was the problem, so I won't need to argue about warranty.

Interesting that Lenovo uses manufacture date on their site for warranty start date since retailers often sit on inventory for a few months.

Thanks,

Bob

P.S. The R-61 never recognized more than 2.99Gb of the 4Gb of installed RAM anyway, so until I swap my bad memory for a new one, I have 2.49Gb.

They have to start somewhere.

By "starting somewhere," do you mean with a proof of purchase from a retailer, the warranty date could be later than date-of-manufacture?

Just curious for my next Think Pad, since I suspect this one is now going to outlive its warranty (since it was bad memory that caused my symptoms).

Yes, and that's what George was saying earlier.

Thanks. George said "might," so I thought that was only an opinion, rather than Lenovo policy.

Sounds like you are saying it is indeed policy. Good to know, becuase this is my first Lenovo, but probably not my last.

Thanks

Thanks for the clarification on warranty start date (first use for new-boxed units).

Actually that's what I would have expected (first use of new boxed as mine was that unit logged into Lenovo registration site), which is why when I entered my model/serial on Lenovo site yesterday to confirm warranty date, it used the manufacture date.

I am just thrilled it's working, though.

Thanks, all.
