Yoga L380 nearly overheating with 65W charger connected + wifi issue

2018-07-17, 10:50 AM

Hello, I've had my new yoga L380 for two days and am noticing that when it charges with supplied 65w USB C charger, both the power adapter brick and the laptop get very hot. The adapter itself gets almost too hot to hold in the hand. The laptop (i5) highest temp I have seen while charging was 85C, even though CPU load was only ~30%. Once it stops charging it cools down.
I also had an issue during charging that the wifi connection dropped and I could not re-connnect to any other network, so it appeared that the heat was affecting the wifi module somehow. Troubleshooting gave no possible software issues and other devices were connected to the same wifi network.

Is this normal? What kind of temps should I be expecting?
I would be ok with slower charging if this prevents the issue but if something is wrong with my battery or charger I need to know.
Thanks in advance.

hi, can we know what application or tool /or behavior  was used to keep CPU loading to 30%? And what tool was used to detect the tempeture when he/she get 85C? if there is any special tool using, can you also provide the link, so we can try this.

I am also facing a similar issue on my Lenovo Yoga L380, temp raises unbearably hot when using this laptop in AC adapter plugged in the state. I bought this laptop a week ago from Lenovo website.

Please provide information on how to fix this issue. Is this a driver or BIOS related issue?

I have this issue, too. Bought Lenovo L380 with Intel Core i5 7th gen processor, directly from Lenovo.com about 3 weeks ago. I love the machine, but the overheating issue is alarming. On occassion it's gotten so hot the OS would present certain bugs, like not recognizing when to switch from desktop to tablet mode (and reverse), lag issues with touch screen, etc. Once machine was allowed to "rest" (unplugged in sleep mode) functionality returned to normal after machine cooled down.

I've currently been using my device for about 4 hours of interrupted use, on wifi, working in multiple presentations and spreadsheets, while also streaming music. Device is on a hard surface in a well-ventilated space, but once battery ran low and I plugged the machine to charge (about an hour ago, I'm presently back at 92% charge), the laptop and power adapter brick are VERY hot, laptop's cooling fan is audibly running.

Has Lenovo looked into this issue and offered any resolution?

Lenovo L380 purchased a few days ago. Same problem here. Laptop overheats while charger is plugged it, and the power adaptor (65W) overheats as well. This is not ok and the latest BIOS update (1.20) didn't solve the issue at all, it only hides the windows 10 "slow charging" error. Thought Lenovo can do better than this, I will just return the laptop and move on to something better.

I have the same problem with my Thinkpad Helix 2nd gen. The power brick is getting so hot when charging that I can't put it in a bag afterwards and always have to wait for some minutes. The back of the tablet can get very hot too! It's worse when I am using the computer while charging. A few days ago, the tablet even smelled like hot electronics! I already bought a new power brick but that didn't help. I would accept more charging time for less heat...

Edit: Sorry that I stepped into this thread about the Yoga L380 with my Thinkpad Helix - but it seems like a general problem to me. Maybe some BIOS refinements could help us?
