integrated camera not working- unhappy customer

2007-12-18, 0:09 AM
Just received it and already feel like returning the machine-

camera only works through a messenger service- only when it is connected to the Net.

Not sure why they have the lenovo care center? the camera cannot be activated from there

the correct driver is installed- device status shows its working properly; the driver status is " most up-to-date driver"

extremely dissatisfied and unhappy with this product!!!!

To return it I have to pay restocking fee, which is unfair to me as it's hardly my fault if Lenovo delivers an Untested machine - I have wasted more time on this laptop than i need to.

Customer service has not been helpful either.

You have an R series with a webcam?  Make sure you have the correct drivers, you can find them on the lenovo web site.  My 3000 has a webcam and works fine in both Vista and XP without all the shenanigans your encountering.

Thanks Andy and Mike for your assistance-

Here is the model number-

8932 CTO R61-1/li
operating sys-Vista
Intel-1.66

I have already installed the correct drivers, this did not solve the problem.  I also tried to go in through scanners/cameras, it only brings up a scanner and does not bring up a USB device on search.

The camera is still not functioning independent of a messenger application.

Blame Microsoft, not Lenovo. This is a shortcoming of Vista, and has NOTHING to do with the hardware.

Try uninstalling/reinstalling the USB hubs in Device Manager.
Have you tried adding an imaging device in Control Panel/Scanners & Cameras?

Re: integrated camera not working- unhappy customer

Actually that lenovo was bought for my brother, i now have a gateway (vista home premium) it seems to be working fine. no problems at all.

And I have deleted the driver, re- installed it -the camera just does not work.
1)1st Customer agent stated that the camera is not "supposed" to function with a messenger application. Since I had heard about this the first time- I did not question that but later did some research to find that it's completely untrue.

2) second customer agent stated that lenovo does not provide the driver and the camera works through a third party application like "messenger" app.. have i heard this before!! phew

3) Third Customer service agent stated that the camera might be defective and i need to send it in. I quit after this and thought that I am on my own and no help was coming from these people.

so it's not vista! Like I said I have had a gateway(vista) for the last two months and there have been no problems whatsoever.

The time wasted on the phone could have been better utilized. it's just easier to get an external camera and install it. The laptop looks very strong and apart from the camera probs, I haven't had any other issues with it.

The imaging device section only comes up with a scanner and does not show the camera at all.

I know the problem, had the same with my R500. Anyway, do you have any photo editor software installed by accident?

Photoshop Elements > File > Import > Integrated Camera,

or

Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo > File > Import > Twain Source: select your integrated camera, after that: File > Import > Twain Acquire. (yep, sounds weird but it works here)

In both instances your integrated cameras display should become visible on the screen. That's what did the trick for me to have the integrated camera available to be able to use it outside of a messenger application or something like that.
