Hello, I purchased 2 sticks of 4gb PNY PC3-8500 am and i am having the same problem. However my problem is only with the 8gb of RAM, If i only install one of the Chips (4GB) the computer works fine and recognizes the 4gb. As soon as i add the second 4gb chip i get the 1-3-3-1 beep and no boot. I have updated the Bios, that did not work. I dont know what else to do. Any ideas?

it could be due to the brand of ram you have. I would usually go with Kingston, Samsung, Micron, etc for 4 gigs modules. So maybe try another brand of ram.
What if yo use the new 4 gigs ram and the old ram that you had (either the 1 or 2 gigs modules).

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad R500 model number 2716 PV3. I logged into Shoplenovo.com to purchase the recommended 4gig memory sticks and it only lists 1g or 2g sticks as possible purchases. Does that mean that my particular model will not handle an 8gig upgrade? I appreciate all the more detailed information that other members have provided. I have been using a PC since 1984 my first was a DEC Rainbow, but this is the first time I will be installing additional memory in a laptop. Please give me a heads up if there are some tricks to this procedure; all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'm pretty sure that the 4G max refers to what Lenovo offered/offers, not what the max is for the hardware.
I'm running 8G in my T400, and Crucial's RAM finder tool says 8G max for your machine. That's the RAM I'd recommend, BTW. Only ~$45 from Crucial, NewEgg, or your vendor of choice.
Crucial® Memory Advisor results for the Lenovo ThinkPad R500 Series Laptop/Notebook.
Your model # indicates that you have Win 7 Pro 64 installed. If that's true, you should be good to go. If you have a 32 bit OS installed, you will only have 3-3.5G of that RAM usable.

Hi,
I just upgrade to 2x4gb crucials too, but my ram score in Win7 WEI is too low for 8 gb's how can this happen?

My WEI score did not change after I upgraded from 6GB to 8GB. Nevertheless I believe my R500 runs better, especially when I run many programs simultaneously &/or have many browser windows open.

Just wanted to update my post from 12/20/2011. I am still running those 2 4GB Corsair DDR3 memory modules that I mentioned earlier, 8GB total DRAM in my Lenovo R500. No problems in 10 months of many hours a day usage. I guess you can't rely on every bit of advice posted!
