Cannot Sign In to Windows Account

My Lenovo Thinkpad Z61t will not access the sign-in screen of Windows (where you enter password and choose user). The Screen comes on at the beginning (saying I can press the Think Vantage button) then the Windows loading screen comes on. This is as normal, but when this completes, the screen goes black (not dark, the screen is still functioning).  There is a cursor (movable) but no sign-in screen loads. It's not a matter of slowness because I left it in this position for quite awhile. I tried to run diagnostics with ThinkVantage but don't really know how they work...nothing seemed to fail test-wise except the battery, which has been totally dead for 2 months.

Any suggestions?  I am in Hong Kong, if that matters, using a plug adapter for my American-style power connecter (have been here 3 mos).
