Fan replacement in R40

Hi, I have this old IBM ThinkPad R40 here, but it's fan is giving me "Fan error" and two beeps on boot. So, I went on eBay and got a new one. I have pics of it by request.

However, I've tried to get the old one with two small Phillips screwdrivers that I have. One was too big, and another was too small. What screwdriver do I need to unscrew these darn screws? Here's a pic of the heatsink side (full size if you want):

Also, do I need thermal paste when replacing the assembly? I'm just asking while I can, and I'm new to replacing a heatsink at all.

Re: Fan replacement in R40

phillip head 1# is usually what i use to remove these screws.

These are by the way: M2 x 13 mm screws.
