I was happy user of my old Acer Travelmate 8000. In march 2009 I decided to buy Lenovo R500 with LCD 1680x1650 200+ nit (cd/m2). You can check it here http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/tabook.pdf
Very soon I realized that the LCD is not so bright as my 5 years old Acer Travelmate 8000 200 nit LCD (1440x1050 matt).
With a small utility Everest, I found that I have LCD LG LP154W02-TL06 in my R500.
I googled and I found that it has probably only 185 nit,,, here:
According to this site http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/TFT_display I found that in R500 are LCD from LG and from Samsung. The second one is Samsung LTN154P3-L02.
Samsung data sheet of this LCD (L03 and L02 are almost the same) is here:
Again, there is only 185 cd/m2 !!!!
Here are some notebook tests
The average brightness for R500 LCD 1680x1050 was 183 cd/m2. (measured with optical probe)
The average brightness for T500 LCD 1680x1050 was 173 cd/m2 (tested Samsung LTN154P3-L02 )
Another review of T500 in english:
The average brightness was 183 cd/m2, the maximum was in the centre 202 cd/2.
My LCD is especially dimm on the left and right side at lower brightness. I have one dark spot (8-9 pixels). In general it is dimm and poor quality. colors and viewing angles are ok, but it is dimm.
My 5 years old Acer LCD is much brighter.
I paid almost 1000 EUR for this crap. In IBM service I told them, it is not 200 nit LCD and I want new brighter LCD or money back. But I think they will refuse my complaint.
I have seen some R500 and T500 ThinkPads and it looks all of them have dimm LCD's (except LED LCD's).
Next time, I will buy HP Elitebook, it has much brighter (and matt) LCD.

if you have dark spot, then you can get the LCD replaced by the warranty department.
Since you spent so much time researching on this issue, can you provide a picture of what your screen is actually doing, so the forum users can better help you.

My LCD looks similar like any other Lenovo R500/T500 LCD's. In service they told me they can replace my LCD (because of small dark spot),,,, but I want to know if my display is realy 200 nit. I doesn't look like 200 nit and the tests are showing it is not 200 nit !
So where is the proof that Lenovo's displays are 200 nit ??
HP's or Acer's 200 nit LCD's realy looks like 200 nit, but lenovo's dont.
It is very serious problem if lenovo is lying.

Ok, my LCD has been replaced. The old one LG LCD in my R500 (manufac. date 2008) was manufactured in 2005 !!!!!!!!!
Now I have Samsung LTN154P3-L02 (from 2007). It is much brighter but the colors are so strange - everything is much brighter, with more white color. It is painful for the eyes.
And the left and bottom sides of the lcd are little bit brighter as the rest.
Next time I will probably buy HP elitebook.
