Intel GM965 Driver Update

2009-02-11, 8:01 AM

I have a Thinkpad R61 with an onboard Intel GM965 and running Vista Home Basic. The current (v7.14.10.1437) version of this video driver has serious issues in many low requirements games (such as World of Warcraft). I noticed that Lenovo published updated drivers for Windows XP in January, but has not updated the Vista drivers since April last year. Is Lenovo not supporting this operation system anymore?

I have tried updating from the Intel page, but it tells me I need a customized manufacturer driver. Just to be clear, I know for a fact that it's the driver causing the issues I'm experiencing in games (e.g., the "driver stopped responding but has recovered" error). I forced the installation of the latest intel drivers and the games are working fine. However, my display is unusable on battery power if I use anything but the manufacturer drivers. So I can either have a fully functional work laptop, but with no gaming, or a laptop that can do gaming, but cannot be used if unplugged from the power chord. Sigh....

If there are any Lenovo support people on this forum, I'd like to know if I can expect any driver updates for this video processor on Vista in the near future.

Same thing I m asking for?Where is or are gonna be a new driver for Vista? I have ThinkPad R61i with GM965 running on Vista Business.I m using my laptop for job and gaming. This Lenovo driver from february last year supports Pixel and Vertex shaders version 3.0 and OpenGL 1.5.The new Intel generic driver have same support P/V shaders 3.0 but without hardware Transform and Lighting.Even they said that GM965 support hw TnL so why isnt activated with Intel or Lenovo graphic driver??Only change I found is that this new intel generic driver change the OpenGL version from 1.5 to 2.0.I had analyzed with Everest Home Edition my laptop and thats I know that there isnt hwTnL support.

Does anyone know a workaround for this issue, or does anyone have a solution?

Well, after I updated my video drivers to the new ones (from 4926 to 5002 I think), I had also the problem with Warcraft III. After doing some googling, it came up with the following workaround:

You have to append one of the two following suffixes to the path in the shortcut, so it does look  like this:

"C:\Warcraft III\Frozen Throne.exe" -swtnl

or

"C:\Warcraft III\Frozen Throne.exe" -opengl

I am satisfied with the first one, however by using software transform and lightning (basically it means that now the processor does what the GM965 graphics card used to do), it sacrifices some portion of the performance. The only issue with the opengl I have found so far is that fonts on the screen (in the game) look a bit different. I was more satisfied with the "-swtnl".

Yes thank you, also found this solution a couple of days ago, after a long struggle, same results as you, opengl graphics has ugly font ingame. Is this Lenovo gonna fix this problem in there drivers? Im not even sure how to notify them about this? Does this only happen in warcraft or in other games aswell that uses T&L ?

Well, neither the Software TnL nor the OpengGL do anything for me. The driver still keeps crashing and recovering. Sometimes it crashes the game entirely.

So far still no update from Lenovo. Sigh....b

That is interesting, maybe on Windows Vista it is something different. On Windows XP it solved it for me. However a new version of drivers would be definitely a better solution, than the workaround. But I don't think that Lenovo can do much in this. Push on Intel to correct it, because some folks can't play Warcraft in default mode? :smileyhappy:

Majro, since the last time Lenovo posted an update, Intel has upgraded the drivers several times! And like I said before, if I try to update from the Intel webpage, it tells me I have to contact my manufacturer (i.e. Lenovo), because I have a customized manufacturer driver.

Moreover, with a forced install of the Intel drivers the game works perfectly, but the laptop is basically useless when running on battery. It flickers every 5-10 seconds. This is an issue that Intel actually did address in their latest version of the driver, but apparently it only works on non customized cipsets. On my laptop the issue remains and it needs to be solved by the manufacturer.

And we seem to be talking about different issues. My game hardly ever freezes. I can play! It's just that the monitor flickers every time the graphics get moderately intense (which sometimes is very often). And I am getting the driver error that I mentioned above.
