Re: L series vs. R series

As part of the EU policy, all consumer electronics will carry a two year minimum warranty, regardless what the official sellers say. So effectively the L series has 2 years warranty.

Not stricktly true; a warranty is something which is freely expressed by a manufacturer, which the end user effectively pays for, and can vary in time scale. What you are referring to is the "Product Liability" law, European law, in this case.

If we stuck to the product liability laws, we'd all be in trouble. You have 6 months after purchase date when the manufacturer is required to prove that the defect wasn't present at the time of purchase. After this you are required to prove it was present at the time of purchase - how difficult could this prove in some situations?  For instance, Lenovo offer a 1 year guarantee on batteries; other notebook manufacturers don't, one in particular doesn't offer any guarantee on batteries but will exchange it on good will inside the first 6 months - this is cheaper for them than doing the work to prove it wasn't defective when purchased. The European product liability laws only apply to private people, not companies.
