L430 / L530 - does it support an upgrade to 16 GB of RAM?

2013-01-17, 7:07 AM

Hi,

Reading the specs I could find for Thinkpads L430/L530, 8 GB of RAM is the indicated maximum.

Is this true? Can I upgrade such a machine to 16 GB? Does it need some kind of firmware upgrade in order to do so?

Hey there alex_ndc,

The L530 & L430 will support a maximum of 8GBs total, meaning you can install a 4GB memory module into each of the SODIMM slots. According to the parts compatibility matrix the following are suitable options for these models:

Lenovo 2GB PC3-12800 DDR3-1600 SODIMM Memory 0A65722

Lenovo 4GB   PC3-12800 DDR3-1600 SODIMM Memory 0A65723

Additionally, Crucial's memory upgrade tool is an excellent resource for seeing the most you can do with the memory modules in your machine, and they confirm a maximum of 8GB of memory. I hope this helps you alex_ndc!

You CAN upgrade the L430 / L530 to 16 GB RAM, as Ivy-Bridge is capable to use up to 32 GB (but not on L430 / T530, because there only two RAM slots). But 16 GB are absolutly possible, even while Lenovo doesn´t support that.

We have a L530 at work that has 16 gigs of ram installed. Lenovo quoted maximum ram is simply the maximum configuration tested at the time of initial shipping,

In many cases, the quoted maximum by Lenovo psref, is not the actual maximum that the machine supports.
