L470 No LTE-Modem found (Sierra EM7455)

Hey there!

I hope you can help me with a problem.

One of our L470's stopped reading simcards all of a sudden (Sierra EM7455 LTE modem). After opening a case, sending the notebook in, getting the mainboard replaced and setting it up with Windows 10 Enterprise x64 again, that modem still won't work!

I hope you can help me here, because at this point i don't want another struggle with the repair center.

ISSUE:

After a clean install of Win 10 Enterprise x64 and the newest official drivers and firmware, including the BIOS of course, the Windows 10 devicemanager doesn't seem to find the LTE-Modem.

The Sierra EM7455 driver from Lenovo won't install.

The newest driver directly from Sierra is able to be installed but the firmware won't because it can't find the modem. Driver and firmware are two separate packages.

I already checked the BIOS. WAN is enabled under 'I/O'.

What else can I try?

Thanks for your help!

Hello and welcome to the Community

What is the FRU # of the modem?

Re: L470 No LTE-Modem found (Sierra EM7455)

Hello and thank you!

How do I find out what FRU # the modem has?
I doubt the modem even is an FRU as they had to change the whole motherboard to repair it.

EDIT:
FRU according to https://support.lenovo.com/at/de/solutions/acc100290

Re: L470 No LTE-Modem found (Sierra EM7455)

There are several em7455 revisions Lenovo offers, with 7 different FRUs. The part of them has limited compatibility with laptops. FRU 00JT542 is for previous ThinkPad generatiion based on Sky Lake. In Kaby Lake laptop it's not recognized. I tested this modem in my T470p, no chances even with the recent firmware from Sierra. The modem appeares in Device Manager after resume from the sleep mode only as a hidden virtual port - the firmware loader. It's impossible to resume it. Unfortunately, your case isn't and will not alone.

So, replace the modem with new one, compatible with L470.

Re: L470 No LTE-Modem found (Sierra EM7455)

Am i right the systemboard has been replaced because of wwan modem issue?

Re: L470 No LTE-Modem found (Sierra EM7455)

Sorry for the misunderstanding!

I checked the part list of the notebook which is a L470 20JU with an i5-6200 cpu.
I have 2 WWAN modules listed:

Sierra EM7455 WWAN Module Rave n2.  FRU#: 01AX748

Sierra EM7455 WWAN Module Rel1 6.     FRU#: 01AX746

The mainboard got replaced because the slot for the simcard didn't recognize simcards anymore.

Thanks for your help!

Re: L470 No LTE-Modem found (Sierra EM7455)

You are right, both modems in your post are compatible with L470.

The sim card can't be recognized by OS network manager if the wwan modem isn't recognized, because of the sim card reader' lanes are routed to the wwan slot.

BTW, MT 20JU is L470, not L460.

Re: L470 No LTE-Modem found (Sierra EM7455)

Update:

Turns out  the WWAN module is not to be found every time I boot the notebook.

Sometimes you see the device in the Lenovo Diagnostics under hardware details and sometimes you won't.

Of course it is the same with the Windows device manager.

The pictures are an hour apart. I did not make any changes to the computer during that hour. I've only done a few reboots.

Re: L470 No LTE-Modem found (Sierra EM7455)

Your 1st photo confirms my statements in the post above - the modem appears in the system by virtual port QDLoader (PID 9078 belongs that port) during some stand-by mode and then is disconnected by unknown reason, becomes a hidden one. Normal behavior is - virtual devices/ports with PID 9079 should be visible, their quantity and types depend on the modem' USB devices configuration.

Re: L470 No LTE-Modem found (Sierra EM7455)

So if i understand that correctly this behaviour is wrong and the usb-device's configuration is most likely to blame.

How could that happen?
