L480 unable to update BIOS

2020-01-07, 12:25 PM

I cannot update BIOS on my ThinkPad L480. After I run winuptp64.exe I complete the wizard. Then system restarts. While booting there is blank screen for a few seconds. Then OS starts but BIOS stays old. Installing BIOS from boot CD doesn't work too.

My actual BIOS version is 1.31 and I'm trying to install BIOS version 1.36. The BIOS was downloaded via Lenovo Update utility. The same problem occured with older BIOS versions: 1.32, 1.33, 1.34, 1.35.

I even created WindowsToGO USB media, boot L480 from it and tried to apply BIOS from there. But the progress was the same. I reset BIOS settings to default but no success.

Winuptp.log

[2020/1/7 12:58:14] version 30.16
OS = Windows 10 64bit
Driver Loading....Done
System BIOS Version -> R0QET54W
Applying BIOS Version -> R0QET58W
AC adapter/Battery check....OK.

BIOS Flashing....BIOS Flash completed.

In the folder where BIOS update files reside there appears filename "null" with this content:

BitLocker Drive Encryption: Configuration Tool version 10.0.18362
Copyright (C) 2013 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

ERROR: The volume G: could not be opened by BitLocker.
This may be because the volume does not exist, or because it is not a valid
BitLocker volume.

But there is no drive G: on my system, even bitlocker is not enabled on my system. The "null" file appears in the folder after unsuccessfull BIOS update.

Please help!

Hi !

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums.

Kindly try to download the latest BIOS for your ThinkPad L480, directly from our support website and make sure to follow the steps below to manually install the BIOS update.

  • Click once on the underlined file name. Once this is done, some pop-up windows will appear.
  • Follow the instructions on the screen.
  • In the window to choose Run or Save, click Save.
  • Choose the folder you would like to download the file to and click Save.
  • A different window will appear and the download will begin and complete.
  • Once the download has completed, there may or may not be a message stating that the download completed successfully.

Extracting file

  • Make sure to be logged on with an administrator account on the target computer.
  • Make sure the AC adapter is firmly connected to the target computer.
  • Locate the folder where the file was downloaded.
  • Locate the file that was downloaded and double-click it.
  • Follow the instructions on the screen.
  • In the Select Destination Location window, click Next. If you would like to select a different folder, click Browse.
  • In the Ready to Install window, click Install. All the necessary files will be extracted to the folder selected in the step 10.

Updating the UEFI BIOS

  • Make sure the checkbox next to "Install ..... now" is checked and click Finish.
  • Follow the instructions on the screen.
  • Select 'Update ThinkPad BIOS' and follow the instructions on the screen.
  • After the update has been completed, the program shows a message 'Flash Update has been successfully completed...'

Re: L480 unable to update BIOS

Hi Van_Lenovo, thank you for your reply, but you have provided me a standard procedure how to update BIOS. I know how to update BIOS. The main cause why I asked for help is that the standard procedure doesn't work. I need to investigate, why the update process fails and how to solve the problem. That's why I enclosed the logs that my be helpfull.

Of course, I have done all the steps (once again) you have mentioned in your reply, but the result was the same, as expected.

All the best,

Edo
