L512 - Serious Audio Issues: Microphone and Speakers

Hi all,

My normally extremely-reliable laptop has lately been giving me a headache.

I used to be able to use Skype normally with my built in microphone, but just recently I had the 'soundcard problem' error, and my microphone was not showing up on the Devices List.

Thinking it was due to the Windows update I performed a few weeks prior, I downloaded a new Realtek Audio driver from the Lenovo support site. However, I was unable to find my computer's model number in the model selector and went with the closest model available.

This resulted in strange, garbled, slow sounds coming out of my speakers periodically. Running two audio sources at once (e.g: Youtube and Windows Media Player) seemed to trigger the odd behaviour.

So, I tracked down an older version of the Realtek HD Audio driver, and this problem is now fixed. (Albeit the speaker level is shown as 0 when I use the volume buttons, even though the volume level changes fine). My microphone is even showing up!

However, now my microphone is completely unusable. It captures a garbled, static, shrill, bleepy mess. It sounds very much like a sample rate problem/gain problem, so I've adjusted those settings but I'm still nowhere.

I'm at my wit's end here -- this laptop is my audio workstation and I really, really need these functions to work reliably!

My laptop specs:

Windows 7 Professional

Re: L512 - Serious Audio Issues: Microphone and Speakers

Hi, Miel

I found the latest audio drivers and a patch available for your system on Lenovo's support site. Are either of the audio drivers that you downloaded listed here? Just to be sure, I would uninstall the current drivers you are using and install the latest driver and the patch from Lenovo and see if that helps your issue.

Best,

Adam
