L520 Shutting Down Without Warning

When connected to internet and mains supply my L520 randomly shuts down - the only warning is that the sound shuts down first followed less than a second later by the computer.  Any ideas as to a solution would be welcomed.

I think you need to clean the fan..

Thanks for that.  I've cleaned the fan - it wasn't too mucky - but I still have the problem.  Any other ideas would be welcomed.

Does the notebook feel hot after shutdown? Specially on the left, close the the Q,W,A,S keys.

 

Can you monitor the temperatures using TPFanControl or HWMonitor? Maybe the fan is clean but the thermal paste is old.

Thanks for that.  Computer not overheating as it sometimes shuts down very soon after switching on and is not even warm to the touch.  However, I've worked out that it happens only when I'm connected to the internet!

Some ideas that may help (not in a particular order):

  • Take a look at the event logs
  • Do you connect to the internet with LAN or the WLAN card? Maybe a defective component?
  • Run a hardware check with software like Lenovo Control Center or HWInfo
  • Boot from a Linux Distro out of a CD/DVD or USB drive
