Re: L520 cpu upgrade

Welcome to the forum!

Unfortunately it won't work, your L520 supports 2nd generation Core i CPU's (Sandy Bridge), the one you mention below is a 3rd generation CPU.

Your upgrade options are these (I'm excluding weaker CPU's than the one you already have):

  • Intel Core i5-2410M, 2,30-2,90Ghz
  • Intel Core i5-2430M 2,40-3,00GHz
  • Intel Core i5-2520M, 2,50-3,20GHz
  • Intel Core i5-2540M, 2,60-3,30Ghz
  • Intel Core i7-2620M, 2,70-3,40GHz

Re: L520 cpu upgrade

What I did not mention before is that the 2nd gen quad cores may work too, like one of these:

  • i7-2670QM (2,20GHz, 6MB L3)
  • i7-2720QM (2.20GHz, 6MB L3)
  • i7-2760QM (2.40GHz, 6MB L3)
  • i7-2820QM (2.30GHz, 8MB L3)
  • i7-2860QM (2.50GHz, 8MB L3)

Now these are CPU's with a higher TDP so they may get hotter than the dual core ones. Yet it is possible to upgrade it (and I recall some L520 owners did here in the forum), but you have to be more careful of the thermal paste you buy and the way you apply it.

See this thread as reference (it's for a L420 but the principle remains the same)

Re: L520 cpu upgrade

It is likely a mistake or the stickers or the case or the motherboard was changed.  Ivy Bridge CPUs won't work on Sandy Bridge boards.
