I'm pretty sure Lenovo has received a number of L520's back regarding the fan issue and they have either not yet fully looked into it or found the solution, hence no updates. There's numerous refurbished L520's in the outlet store after all - how many of those sent back because of the fan issue is questionable. Obviously this is not an isolated issue. Mine has it too but I've learned to live with it. Still hoping for that fix, though - hopefully in the form of a BIOS update.

There wont be any update until someone send his or her machine in to help Lenovo. If you want to do this, you should contact nine.
It's not possible me to send the computer to Lenovo. I'm doing this on behalf of my friend and she needs the computer.
If Lenovo send a replacement machine, for example L530, we would be able to send the machine.

I give it up. In the next month I will contact the support to see whether the overheating after standy-by is an issue or not, for me it is even after all firmware updates. I don't want to live anymore with this issue. If that's a known issue to the support, I will return my Thinkpad and get another (non-lenovo) replacement. I am really tired of this issue, not to speak about the fan...

We are not alone with this:
Lenovo is losing credibility due these fan problems. I think you should hire that guy who makes tpfancontrol program. Problem would be solved You really should open fan control for users and make it customizible through bios.

They even don't need to hire him. All they have to do is to improve their bad programming style of the power driver. Lenovo programmers access the controller device without locking it, so TPFanControl can't recognize any concurrent access.
It's a simple rule for accessing hardware register to aquire a mutex (exclusive access right). Changing this is just a small issue, but Lenovo allways prove that they don't care.
Look at this thread, it's quite obvious. They support quite a few devices, but the entry level Lx20 or Lx30 are not amongst them. I'm really fed up with them. My L520 is just 1/2 year old and I'm not able to run Win 8 because of drivers missing and a severe crash when putting the device to sleep. Users reported that Lenovo customer service didn't care about this issue.
