L540 with Windows 10, screen randomly goes black, no pointer / cursor

2016-05-16, 17:39 PM

I got my L540 with Windows 10 last December (2015).

  • Starting in March or so of 2016, my laptop's screen would go black (you can see some back-light so the monitor is functioning) and there is NO pointer / cursor.
  • It started infrequently (once a week or so) and then worked it's way up to several times a day.
  • Suspending (closing the lid or using the power button) and reactivating restores the system to where it was when the screen went dark
  • Sometimes, waiting 30 minutes or more would take me back to a functional machine.
  • While the screen is dark, I can hear the fan and other noises from the laptop itself.
  • I've disabled as many of the Windows apps as I can to see if it is app updating or some such thing.  But it's still happening.

In addition, the screen will randomly "flash" or "blink" for reason I can detect.

I found this thread for the Y50-70s:

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Lenovo-Y50-70-black-screen-at-random-times/m-p/2172184/highlight/true#M131806

where Blue Screen Again wrote:

"From what I've read here, it is probably some power supply to screen issue or bad LCD cable, might be completely wrong though."

Does anyone have any suggestions for how I might determine whether this is a hardware or software issue?

Thanks, in advance, for your time.

New information.  My laptop doesn't shut down, the screen is black (but backlit) and there is no mouse pointer.

However, I can use Remote Desktop to connect with the laptop and all of my applications are still open and functioning.  I can log into the laptop (blindly) and type into notepad and then connect with Remote Desktop and see that they keystrokes made it through to the application.

So the system itself seems functional.  Now to figure out what part of the video system is breaking..

Additional information.  When I have an external monitor set up, the external monitor functions as it should even when the laptop monitor goes black.

Any advice on how to troubleshoot from here?

Hello there,

In order to find the issue is related to hardware or software......

The rule of thumb is that when its a hardware fault the flashing screen/Black screen/Flickering sreen will appear even on the BIOS Setup menu(Press F1 on boot & watch somtime while navigating bios menus & simultaneously doing playing around with laptop lid moving & even connecting & diconnecting power source)...Reasons contributing this will be Power supply fault,Bad display connector cable, bad connection of battery in MOBO,Problem with RAM/VRAM or the issue with the display itself..

If nothing happens in bios menu & every thing is perfect  after doing all the things i have mentioned then its purely a software/drivers fault...

Hope it helps

Cheers

Kamal

Hi Kamal,

Thank you for the information.

I will give it a go.  However, the issue is _very_ intermittent.  (I can use the computer for a week without it happening.)  It makes it difficult to tell whether or not I have found a solution.  (Not sure I'm going to be able to spend a week with it on the BIOS screen!)

I uninstalled the video driver and installed the one for the L540 on the Lenovo site (Intel HD Graphics 4600, v20.19.15.4312).  The issue persists.

Additional information: when I put the system to sleep (using the Windows Star Menu Power options, not moving the laptop or touching the power button), the system resumes normally, like nothing happened.

I will post more information as it becomes available.

More information...

Recently discovered this issue began after installing "Lenovo updates" through Lenovo Companion.
