Lenovo ThinkPad R61i UPGRADE

I have the Lenovo laptop. Model R61i.

Processor: T5550 1.83 Ghz.
RAM: 2GB 667 Mhz.
Motherboard: Lenovo 8943-dtg.

I want to improve my laptop. So I have a few questions.

Is Core 2 Duo T7700 will it work?
Is Core 2 Duo T9600 will it work?

What kind of RAM should I buy? 667 Mhz or 800 Mhz?
What is the maximum RAM, this motherboard supports?
Does the RAM operates in dual channel mode?

What is the maximum size hard drive that can handle this motherboard?
Can I connect a 7200 RPM hard drive?
Can I connect SATA II hard disk?

Laptop has a 15 inch screen. Resolution: 1024 x 768 Matrix matt.

Is it possible to hook up the screen instead of another of the same size, but a higher resolution?

How much plugging T7700 CPU will affect battery life?
What is the most powerful battery that can be connected to a laptop?

Thank you in advance for your answers.

Re: Lenovo ThinkPad R61i UPGRADE

Welcome to the forum!

There's no hard drive size limit on your machine - so if you want to put in 500GB, go ahead. The same holds true for the drive speed - your choice.

Any 9.5 mm laptop SATA drive - including SATA II - will work fine, but you'd need a modded BIOS to utilize the SATA II speeds on your machine.

T9600 will not work. T7700 should.

Your machine can handle 4GB of RAM for sure. And yes, if both slots are populated, it works in dual channel mode.

You could upgrade the screen to SXGA+ (1400x1050) or UXGA (1600x1200) that were used on T60/p generation.

Enjoy the upgrade process.

Cheers,

George

Re: Lenovo ThinkPad R61i UPGRADE

Thanks for your reply! And again :- )

I read that this laptop supports 4GB of RAM, but sometimes this is limited to 3GB. Apparently about 32-bit operating system. Can someone explain to me what's going on?

I reiterate the question. What speed RAM do I use? Is DDR2 800 Mhz make sense?

If I update my BIOS and plug in a SATA-II 7200 RPM, it will run faster than SATA I 7200 RPM? Could this result is that SATA-II will work, but not faster?

UXGA (1600x1200). Is if I stretch out from the model T60 / p can be immediately connected to a R61i with a resolution of 1024 x 768 (15 inches)?

Re: Lenovo ThinkPad R61i UPGRADE

DDR2 667 mhz is the max speed it will run at, but you can use the 800 mhz version they will clock down to the 667 mhz speed.

The R61 can support 8 gigs of ram max. 32 bit OS 3 gigs, 64 bit OS 3 gigs +

Re: Lenovo ThinkPad R61i UPGRADE

You talk about the ThinkPad R61, but is it the same as R61i? On the Internet, they write that the maximum amount of memory is 4GB. So how much can I give?

Re: Lenovo ThinkPad R61i UPGRADE

if it is using the GM965 intel chipset it is the same. I have both the R61 and R61i.

The listed maximum was the RAM it could take when the laptop was tested, since 2 gigs ram module was the only thing available.

It's not a matter of simply updating the BIOS. What you need is a "modded" BIOS which was *not* made by Lenovo, so proceeed at your own risk. With that particular BIOS, your machine will run at SATA 3.0 speeds. With any official BIOS, it will remain at SATA I (1.5) speeds.

Yes, any UXGA screen from T60p (make sure it's a genuine Hydis or ID Tech panel, with a FRU number) is plug and play on your machine, just swap the panels. The same holds true for SXGA+ LCDs from T60/p.

Good luck.

George
