Lenovo Thinkpad L560 - Bios Update from 1.18 to 1.43 fails

Hi,

I was wondering if you could help me, I want to upgrade the BIOS of the L560 from 1.18 to 1.43.

Each time I try this, it boots into the bios system, I select bios update and follow the steps until the screen says that it will reboot, but it never does. (see screenshot)

WhatsApp Image 2018-08-29 at 11.37.15.jpegFrozen at this screen

After hours of waiting, trying to long press (20 sec) the power button shuts down the computer.

Afterwards the computer boots but displays "Secure Flash Authentication failed!"

WhatsApp Image 2018-08-29 at 11.38.59.jpegAfter forced reboot

After that I have to long press (20 sec) the power button again to restart the computer and it boots back into the 1.18

(I have also tried to update to version 1.22 or 1.17 (downgrade), with the same results)

And also tried to "upgrade" to the same version 1.18 as well, which doesn't work because the system says that there is no new version.

Do you have any tips how to upgrade the BIOS on the L560?

Kind Regards

Olaf

Welcome to the Community

According to the BIOS update readme file:
"UPDATING THE UEFI BIOS

Notes:
- If the UEFI BIOS version is lower than 1.33 on your computer, please update to version 1.40. And then, please update to version 1.41 or higher for the ECP update."

Older BIOS version (1.40)

Re: Lenovo Thinkpad L560 - Bios Update from 1.18 to 1.43 fails

Thanks a million,

I have tried to update to version 1.40 but that one failed in the same way.

Did I create a problem by trying to update to 1.42/1.43 beforehand and not going first to 1.40?

Kind Regards

No, I think.

Is there a supervisor password in the BIOS Setup?
What's the OS version you perform the BIOS update from?

Thank you so much for continue to help me.

No, there is no Supervisor Password in BIOS.

I am using the CD boot option to do this. (iso)
But installed is Ubuntu.

What's the laptop's boot mode BIOS setting? It shouldn't be "Legacy only".

Do you use CD/DVD media for the BIOS update? Or USB flash drive with El Torito ISO image converted to .img format?

Re: Lenovo Thinkpad L560 - Bios Update from 1.18 to 1.43 fails

Thanks, yes, the BIOS boot mode is set to both. And I can boot from the CD and from the CD/DVD.

I have tried both, I have tried the variant to burn the ISO to CD/DVD and I have tried to use a USB with EL Torito.

Unfortunately, the result is always the same.

USB flash drive with not converted EL Torito ISO image doesn't work.

I'm not sure you found v.1.40 ISO image, so here you are

Try to disable OS Optimized Defaults setting in the BIOS Setup. I don't see futher advices.

Re: Lenovo Thinkpad L560 - Bios Update from 1.18 to 1.43 fails

Thank you very much, yes,I just tried it again, and the bios update hangs at the same location.

And yes, the OS Optimized Defaults setting is set to disabled.

I have even tried the factory reset of the BIOS. But it still does not work and it does hang at the same position.

Does the BIOS update write anything on the HDD? Would it make a difference if I remove the HDD?

Is there a way to reinstall the current version of 1.18?

Kind Regards
Olaf

From external media? No
I hoped the issue is caused by the boot mode or secure boot features.

> Is there a way to reinstall the current version of 1.18?

yes. There is a setting in the BIOS - Secure RollBack Prevention. But why? It seems better to perform the next minor update, 1.21

Anyway, 1.18
