Microsoft Notebook Optical Mouse 3000 doesn't work on R52

I have an R52 Thinkpad 185928U running XP that was "virgin" (not connected to the web) until I did some updates to get a new optical mouse installed.

Below are the updates:

UltraNav driver for Windows XP, 2000 - ThinkPad   2008-08-06
UltraNav Utility for Windows Vista, XP - ThinkPad   2008-08-06
 UltraNav Wizard for Windows 2000/XP - ThinkPad R40, R50, R50p, R51, R52, R60, T30, T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p, T43, T43p, T60, T60p, Z60m, Z60t, Z61m, Z61p, Z61t   2006-10-18
TrackPoint Accessibility driver for Windows 98/SE/Me/NT/2000/XP/XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 - ThinkPad   2006-02-06

Also a mouse driver from Microsoft for the Wireless Optical Mouse 3000:

The optical mouse still doesn't work.

My other USB mouse still works fine so the problem is not the USB connector.

I suppose I could have a bad mouse, but it seems to be working.

The lights flash and light on both the mouse and the USB connector.

I'm going to double check on the driver with Microsoft because the literature calls for V6.1 and I have 6.3

Nope. That's the correct driver software.

Any suggestions appreciated.
